            Entombment services for the Rev. Herman S. Anderson, 77, 500 Peach 
            Orchard Drive, Kingsport, who died Thursday (Nov. 22, 2001), will be 
            conducted at 3 p.m. today at Oak Hill Mausoleum with American Legion 
            Hammond Post No. 3 Color Guard in charge. 
            Pallbearers will be Scott Anderson, David Anderson, Jonathan 
            Anderson, Derek Anderson, David Fields and Bobby Salyers. 
            Honorary pallbearers will be area ministers and pastors. 
            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Higher 
            Ground Baptist Church Building Fund, Lynn Garden Drive, Kingsport,

            Gertrude Armstrong, 88, Baileyton.

            BAILEYTON - Gertrude Armstrong, 88, of Lost Mountain of Baileyton, 
            died Friday (Nov. 23, 2001) at her residence. 
            She was a farmer and homemaker. 
            She was preceded in death by her parents, James Thomas and Bertie 
            Elizabeth Armstrong; and three brothers, James T. Armstrong, 
            Theodore Armstrong and W.B. Armstrong. 
            Surviving are one brother and sister-in-law, George and Frances 
            Armstrong of Baileyton; one sister, Otha Falin of Knoxville; one 
            aunt, Mary Hilton; and several nieces and nephews. 
            Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at 
            Jeffers Mortuary, Greeneville. 
            Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Goshen Valley Church 
            of God with the Rev. Eddie Malone and the Rev. Billy Moore 
            officiating. 
            Interment will be in Goshen Valley Cemetery. 
            Nephews will serve as pallbearers. 

            Dale Barnette, 34, Church Hill.

            CHURCH HILL - Dale Ray Barnette, 34, 250 Christian Bend Road, died 
            Friday (Nov. 23, 2001) unexpectedly at his residence. 
            Born in Dayton, Ohio, he moved to Duffield, Va., in 1972 and came to 
            this area in 1975. Mr. Barnette was disabled. 
            He was preceded in death by his father, Kelly Barnette, and his 
            stepfather, Carl Savage. 
            Surviving are his mother, Georgia Childress Savage, Church Hill; his 
            daughter, Sylvia Barnette; his son, Oren Ray Barnette, both of 
            Kingsport; sister, Shelby Giolitto and husband, Norman, Dayton Ohio; 
            brothers, Gene Barnette, Surgoinsville, Harold Barnette and wife, 
            Chris, Church Hill, and Wayne Barnette and special friend, Diane, 
            Dayton, Ohio; a special nephew, Kelly Barnette; several nieces, 
            nephews and a host of friends. 
            Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Carter-Trent 
            Funeral Home of Church Hill. 

            Oscar Bledsoe, 78, Blackwater, Va.
               
            BLACKWATER, Va. - Services for Oscar Lewis Bledsoe, 78, who was born 
            on March 15, 1923 and went to sleep in the arms of Jesus on Nov. 23, 
            2001, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at the Colonial Funeral Home 
            Chapel, Weber City, Va., with Elder Scott Tipton and Elder Roger 
            Trent officiating. 
            Music will be provided by Harry Rhoton Singers. 
            Burial will be at Roller Family Cemetery near the residence. 
            Pallbearers will be Jerry Sams, Terry Gilliam, Fred Bledsoe, Ray 
            Kerney, Paul Rhoton and Buddy Burchell. 

            Sarah Ellen Brooks, 76, Norton, Va.

            NORTON, Va. - Sarah Ellen Brooks, 76, died Friday (Nov. 23, 2001) in 
            Norton Community Hospital. 
            She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Norton. 
            She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Brooks; sisters, 
            Charlotte Brooks and Lois Gibson; and a granddaughter, Jennie Estep. 

            Surviving are her sons, Mike Brooks and Gene Brooks, both of Norton; 
            son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Sandra Kinser Brooks, Norton; 
            daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Jeff Franklin, Norton; sister, 
            Betty Hines, Jonesville, Va.; sister-in-law, Ramona Dye, Norton; 
            four grandchildren, Chris, Shannon, Patrick and Justin; and five 
            great-grandchildren, "Lil" Patrick, Megan and Paige, Nicholas and 
            Rachel. 
            Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Hagy & Fawbush 
            Funeral Home in Norton. 
            Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home 
            chapel with the Rev. Larry Coeburn and the Rev. Steve Conerly 
            officiating. 
            Burial will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery. 

            W.D. Churchwell, 76, Rogersville.

            ROGERSVILLE - William David Churchwell, 76, went to be with the Lord 
            Friday (Nov. 23, 2001) at Bristol Hospice House. 
            He was born in Kingsport and spent most of his life in Columbus, 
            Ohio. He was a retired brick mason with the local 55 in Columbus, 
            Ohio. He was a member of Howe's Chapel Baptist Church. 
            He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; his parents, George 
            and Fannie Churchwell; two sisters, Betty Lou Churchwell and Irene 
            Pleasant; two brothers, Lloyd Allan Churchwell and Jesse Pace; and a 
            stepson, James E. Bellamy. 
               
            Surviving are his wife, Nina Woodson Churchwell, of the home; three 
            daughters, Cathy Churchwell Sidorenko, Columbus, Ohio, Tamra 
            Churchwell Wood, Worthington, Ohio, and Sonie Churchwell Bolton, 
            Kingsport; two special sons, Reed Nickels, Bath, Maine, and Matthew 
            Christian, of the home; four stepdaughters, Rachael Christian, 
            Natasha Lovin, Carolyn Rakestraw, Barbara Russell, all of 
            Rogersville; five sisters, Wanda Phillips, Joyce Allen, Velma 
            Walters, all of Rogersville, Norma Housewright, Church Hill, and 
            Annette Bailey, Cowan, Tenn.; three brothers, Harold Churchwell, 
            Rogersville, Raymond Churchwell, Mount Carmel, and Michael 
            Churchwell, Johnson City; 10 grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; 
            one great-grandson, Drâvin David Salyer; several nieces and nephews. 

            Calling hours are from 6:30 to 8: 30 p.m. today at Carter-Trent 
            Funeral Home of Church Hill. 
            Services will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. today in the funeral home 
            chapel with Elder Stanley Trent and the Rev. Victor Wallace 
            officiating. 
            Music will be provided by the Martin Sisters. 
            Graveside services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Liberty 
            Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Victor Wallace officiating. 
            Pallbearers will be James Martin, Buddy Martin, Chris Lovin, David 
            Bolton, Robbie Russell and Steve Pleasant. 
            Family and friends will meet at Carter-Trent Funeral Home at 10:30 
            a.m. Monday to assemble for the procession to the cemetery. 

            John Thomas Coe, 63, Lebanon, Va.

            LEBANON, Va. - John Thomas (Tommy) Coe, 63, died Saturday (Nov. 24, 
            2001) in the Maple Grove Health Care Center. 
            A native of Smyth County, he was the son of the late John Henry Coe 
            and Virginia Blevins Coe. He was a retired assistant resident 
            engineer of the Lebanon Residency of the Virginia Department of 
            Transportation, and a retired consultant for V.G.S. 
            The former owner of Coe's Cards in Lebanon, he was a member of the 
            Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church and a member and Past 
            Master of the Lebanon Masonic Lodge No. 251 A.F.&A.M. He was an 
            assistant scoutmaster of Troop No. 239 in Lebanon and had been named 
            "Volunteer of the Year" by the Ronald McDonald House in Roanoke. 
            He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, and was a sports 
            fan. 
            In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, 
            Randy Coe; and one sister, Evelyn Hamilton. 
            Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Alice Coe; one daughter and 
            son-in-law, Deborah and Byron (Bo) Rose, Lebanon; two sons and 
            daughters-in-law, Alan and Debbie Coe, Lebanon, and Matt and Trayce 
            Coe, Roanoke; four grandchildren, Jason Coe, Amanda Rose, Jon Rose 
            and Travis Rose, all of Lebanon; brother-in-law, Coy Martin and wife 
            Sandi, Abingdon, Va.; sister-in-law, Shirley Duncan and husband 
            Jerry, Gary, W.Va. 
            Calling hours will be after 6 p.m. today at Combs Funeral Service, 
            Lebanon, where Masonic rites will be conducted at 8 p.m. by the 
            Lebanon Masonic Lodge No. 251 A.F.&A.M. 
            Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home 
            chapel with the Rev. Darrell Fletcher and the Rev. Austin Fields 
            officiating. 
            Burial will follow in the Ketron Memorial Gardens. 
            Pallbearers will be Bernard Meade, Roy Harrison, David Cook, Larry 
            Phipps, Bill Jackson and Russell Bryant.

            Kenneth Culbertson, 82, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - H. Kenneth "Cub" Culbertson, 82, died Saturday morning 
            (Nov. 24, 2001) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a 
            brief illness. 
            Born in Scott County, Va., he had resided in Kingsport since 1939. 
            Mr. Culbertson retired from Tennessee Eastman Company where he 
            worked in A.Y. and warehousing operations for 44 years. 
            He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. 
            His wife, Willie Taylor Culbertson; infant daughter, Judy Carole 
            Culbertson; parents, Harvey and Effie Lay Culbertson, preceded him 
            in death. 
               
            Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Wayne Medlin, 
            Kingsport; a grandson, Kenneth Dale McLean, Kingsport; two nieces, 
            Martha Cox Woodall, Martha Ann Thompson; three nephews, Bill 
            Osborne, Bill Culbertson, Tom Ramey, three special caregivers, Beth 
            Keys, Susan Quillen, and Tina Jeffers. 
            Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Hill 
            Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Teague officiating. 
            Family will receive friends immediately following the service at the 
            cemetery, or anytime at 1576 Warpath Drive, Kingsport, Tenn. 37664. 
            The family will meet at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown 
            Kingsport, at 1 p.m. Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery.

            Wilbur O. Dean, 85, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - Wilbur Otis Dean, 85, passed away Saturday (Nov. 24, 
            2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center. 
            Wilbur was born Aug. 26, 1916 in Gate City, Va., a son of the late 
            Sylvester P. and Eliza Victora Henry Dean. 
            He was retired from the Tennessee Eastman Company in the Chemical & 
            Plastics division after 44 years of service. 
            He was a member of the Optimist Club of Lynn Garden where he served 
            as president in 1958. 
            In addition to his parents, Wilbur was preceded in death by his 
            wife, Myrtle Starnes Dean, in 1994. 
            Surviving are his daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Jim Kilgore 
            of Arkansas, Teddi and Bobby Heck of Kingsport; a son and 
            daughter-in-law, Stephen W. and Nancy Dean of Knoxville; five 
            grandchildren, Kevin Heck, Mat Kilgore, Whitney Dean, Adam Dean and 
            Travis Dean; five sisters, Georgia Miller, Artie McConnell, Joann 
            Whitaker, all of Kingsport, Naomi Piper of Knoxville, and Faye Ebert 
            of Blacksburg, Va.; one brother, Jerry L. Dean of Murfreesboro; 
            several nieces and nephews. 
            Calling hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the East Lawn 
            Funeral Home. 
            There will be a private graveside service for the family with the 
            Rev. Mat Kilgore officiating. 

            Amburs Dockery, 80, Kingsport.
               
            A memorial service for Amburs B. Dockery, 80, Kingsport, who passed 
            away on Thursday (Nov. 22, 2001), will be held at 3 p.m. today in 
            the Oak Hill Funeral Home Chapel. 
            The Dockery family will receive friends today from 1:30 to 3 p.m. 
            A military graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in 
            Oak Hill Cemetery.

            Paul Drinnon, 63, Rogersville.

            ROGERSVILLE - Services for Paul E. "Tooty" Drinnon, 63, 241 Marble 
            Hall Road, who went to be with the Lord at 6:13 a.m. Thursday (Nov. 
            22, 2001), will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Pleasant Hill 
            Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Glen Bradley, the Rev. Rex 
            Morelock and the Rev. Robby Drinnon officiating. 
            Interment will be in the Hawkins County Memorial Gardens. 
            Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville, is in charge of 
            arrangements. 

            Magdaline Frohling, 71, Bristol.

            BRISTOL - Magdaline "Maggie" Frohling, 71, went to be with the Lord 
            Tuesday (Nov. 20, 2001). 
            She was the wife of James R. Frohling. She donated her body to 
            medical science. 
            A memorial service is incomplete. Arrangements will be announced at 
            a later date.

            John Wayne Gilliam, 56, Johnson City.

            JOHNSON CITY - John Wayne Gilliam, 56, formerly of Wise, Va., passed 
            away Friday (Nov. 23, 2001) at his home. 
            He was of the Baptist faith. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Melvina Hillman 
            Gilliam. 
            Surviving are two sisters, Reba Lawson of Bristol, Va., and Sylvia 
            Stillman of Chesapeake, Va.; four nieces; and one great-niece. 
            There will be no visitation at the funeral home. 
            Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the 
            Hillman-Gilliam Cemetery, Wise, Va., with the Rev. Ricky Mullins 
            officiating. 
            Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise, Va., is in charge of the arrangements. 

            Howard Hood, 74, Etowah, Tenn.

            ETOWAH, Tenn. - Howard Keener Hood, 74, died Thursday (Nov. 15, 
            2001) at Athens Regional Medical Center. 
            A native of Sullivan County, he was a son of the late Nathan Frank 
            and Blanche Coates Hood, and was preceded in death by two daughters, 
            Rebecca Lynn Hood and Sandra Elaine Hood; and one grandson, Jason 
            Whitney Cassada. 
            He was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. 
            Survivors include his wife, Betty Sprinkle Hood of Etowah; one 
            daughter and son-in-law, Deborah (Debbie) and Kenneth Terrell 
            (Terry) Cassada of Athens; two granddaughters, Crystal Nicole of 
            U.T., Knoxville, and Camille Melody of Athens; one sister and 
            brother-in-law, Juanita and Don McKenzie of Johnson City; and 
            several nieces and nephews. 
            Services were held at 8 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 18, 2001) in the 
            south chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home, Etowah, with the Rev. Ronnie 
            Allen officiating. 
            The family received friends at the funeral home prior to the 
            services. 
            Burial was at 2 p.m. Sunday in Green Hill Cemetery.

            William R. Nichols Sr., 66, Big Stone Gap, Va.

            BIG STONE GAP, Va. - William R. "Bill" Nichols Sr., 66, died Friday 
            (Nov. 23, 2001) at Wellmont-Lonesome Pine Hospital. 
            He was born in Osaka, Va., the son of the late Jess and Iva Belle 
            (Galloway) Nichols, and had lived most of his life in Big Stone Gap. 

            He was a carpenter, and a U.S. Army veteran of Korea and Vietnam. 
            He was of the Pentecostal faith. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Judy Lynn 
            Nichols; and a sister, Thelma Vernon. 
            Surviving are his wife, Jean Nichols; two sons, Michael Dale Nichols 
            and girlfriend, Judy Young, Big Stone Gap, and William Ray Nichols 
            Jr. and wife, Becky, Big Stone Gap; one daughter, Sherry Bandy and 
            husband, Terry, Big Stone Gap; four grandchildren, Chris Gilliam, 
            Mickey Gilliam, Cody Nichols and Jessica Lynn Nichols; four 
            great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ted Nichols and J.C. Nichols, 
            both of Big Stone Gap, and Hubert Nichols, Nashville; one sister, 
            Betty Anderson, Rogersville; and several nieces and nephews.

            Graveside services for Mary Edith Owens, 78, Kingsport, who went 
            home to be with our Lord on Thursday, (Nov. 22, 2001), will be 
            conducted at 3 p.m. today at the Pierson Family Cemetery, Ft. 
            Blackmore, Va. 
            Nephews will serve as pallbearers. 
            The family will be meeting at 2:15 p.m. at the funeral home to go in 
            procession to the graveside services.

            Brandon Roberts, 23, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - Brandon Lynn Roberts, 23, passed away Saturday (Nov. 24, 
            2001). 
            He was the son of Lynn and Janet Roberts, of Kingsport, and Kathy 
            and Ken Zollman, of the Rock Springs community of Kingsport. He was 
            a 1996 graduate of Sullivan South. 
            Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by a sister, Amanda Sue Roberts; 
            his paternal grandparents, Elcer D. Roberts and Jessie Roberts; and 
            maternal grandfather, James Metcalf. 
               
            Survivors, other than his parents, are a sister, Jina Roberts Cox 
            and husband Jeff, of Harmony; two brothers, Nathan Zollman, Rock 
            Springs community of Kingsport, and Cody (Spud) Roberts, of 
            Kingsport; two nieces, Logan and Sydney Cox, of Kingsport; maternal 
            grandmother, Louise Metcalf, of Johnson City; maternal 
            stepgrandmother, Helen Zollman, of Kingsport; maternal 
            stepgrandparents, Bill and Lucy Ellis, of Church Hill; several 
            aunts, uncles and cousins.

            Chapel, Gray. 
            Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday in the Gray Chapel.

            Helen Roberts, 102, Wise, Va.

            WISE, Va. - Helen Gould Fulton Roberts, 102, passed away Tuesday 
            (Nov. 20, 2001) at Heritage Hall Health Care in Wise. 
            She was born in Wise, where she lived all her life. 
            She was a devoted mother, former school teacher, former deputy clerk 
            of Wise County, and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of 
            Wise. 
            She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl H. Roberts; one 
            daughter, Ruth Beth Bray; two sons, Wade H. Roberts and Carl H. 
            Roberts; and her parents, Elbert Martin Fulton, attorney, and 
            Sophronia Dotson Fulton. 
            Surviving are two daughters, Mary R. Bragg, Asheville, N.C., and 
            Martha Holyfield and husband James, Denver, Colo.; three sons, Joe 
            H. Roberts and wife Lona Wharton Roberts, Wise, Robert Roberts, 
            Roanoke, Va., and George Roberts and wife Dorris, Clinton, Tenn.; 
            daughter-in-law, Betty Helen Roberts, Wise; 19 grandchildren and 
            several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

            Nellie Roberts, 64, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - Nellie Ruth Roberts, 64, 1174 Dorothy Street, died 
            Saturday morning (Nov. 24, 2001) at Wellmont Hospice House in 
            Bristol after an extended illness. 
            Born in Kermit, Va., she had resided in Kingsport most of her life. 
            She retired early due to poor health from Holston Valley Medical 
            Center where she worked as a dietician cook for many years. 
            Mrs. Roberts was a Holiness. 
            Her father, Kyle Amos; and brother, David Glen Amos, preceded her in 
            death. 
               
            Surviving are her husband of 49 years, William Jack Roberts, of the 
            home; two daughters, Louetta Ruth "Cookie" Roberts, Winston-Salem, 
            N.C., and Crystal Norris, Rule Hall, N.C.; four sons, David Glen 
            Roberts, Kingsport, Timothy Cole Roberts, Kingsport, William Clinton 
            Roberts, Kingsport, and Harry Melvin Roberts, Pfafftown, N.C.; 17 
            grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; mother, Grace Vinson, 
            Church Hill; five sisters, Edith Ann Hanson, Mount Carmel, Edna 
            Knowles, Church Hill, Bobbie King, Church Hill, Shirley Lane, 
            Kermit, Va., Mary Lou Morris, Cleveland, Tenn.; five brothers, Paul 
            Amos, Kingsport, Tommy Amos, Church Hill, Jackie Amos, Kingsport, 
            Kenneth Amos, Surgoinsville, Carl Amos, Kingsport; and several 
            nieces and nephews.

            Ardena Robinette, 101, Blackwater, Va.

            BLACKWATER, Va. - Ardena Jane (Stewart) Robinette was born July 9, 
            1900 and passed from this life Friday (Nov. 23, 2001) at the age of 
            101 years, four months, and 16 days at the Heritage Hall Nursing 
            Home in Big Stone Gap, Va. 
            She was the daughter of the late Jackson and Dora (Fannon) Stewart. 
            She professed faith in Christ at the age of 13 and was a member of 
            several church in the Eda. Later in life, she joined Roller's Chapel 
            where she remained a faithful member until her death. 
            She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Daniel B. 
            Robinette in 1977; by two sons, Marson Robinette and Roy P. 
            Robinette; by two sons-in-law, John Osborne and Elmer McPherson; and 
            by a daughter-in-law, Edith Robinette. 
            She was married on Nov. 15, 1925 and her survivors include: two 
            daughters, Imogene McPherson, Blackwater, and Mary Ruth Osborne, 
            Waynesville, Ohio; two sons, Joe Robinette, Pennington Gap, Va., and 
            Lester E. Robinette, Xenia, Ohio; 21 grandchildren, 48 
            great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, 
            Dora Glass, Blackwater; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. 
            The family thank God for all the years they had with her. We know 
            she waited a long time to be with the Lord and her friends, so, 
            Mama, you sleep well until we meet again where we will never more 
            part. 
            Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Robinette 
            Funeral Home, Blackwater. 
            Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home 
            chapel with the Rev. Richard Seiber, the Rev. Harold L. Shaw and 
            Elder John Henry Sybert officiating. 
            Music will be provided by Jason and Naomi. 
            Interment will follow in the Flag Pond Community Cemetery. 

            Carl Wade Stapleton, 60, Stapleton, Ind.

            NOBLESVILLE, Ind. - Carl Wade Stapleton, 60, formerly of the Stone 
            Creek area of Lee County, Va., died suddenly on Friday (Nov. 23, 
            2001) at his residence of an apparent heart attack. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Buford and Zessie 
            Stapleton; one brother, Clinton Stapleton; and one grandson. 
            Survivors include his wife, Sandy Stapleton, Noblesville; sons, John 
            and Mark Stapleton, and one daughter, Carla, all of Noblesville; one 
            sister, Elizabeth "Liz" Myers and husband Bill, Jonesville, Va.; one 
            brother, Jerry Stapleton and wife Patty, Dryden, Va. 
            Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hughes and 
            Wagner Funeral Home in Noblesville. 
            At the request of Carl Wade, he will be cremated after the 
            visitation.

            Marian Strickland, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - Marian Browne Strickland died Thursday (Nov. 22, 2001) 
            at her home. 
            Mrs. Strickland was born in Sumter, S.C., to Edwin L. Browne and 
            Mary Belle Browne. She was married to Thomas H. Strickland, her 
            loving husband of 56 years, who preceded her in death, Feb. 17, 
            2000. She was a long time member of First Broad Street United 
            Methodist Church. 
            Mrs. Strickland grew up in Atlanta, Ga., and attended the University 
            of Georgia and Georgia State College for Women (Milledgeville, Ga.). 
            After graduation, she taught school in the Atlanta City Schools. In 
            February 1944, she married and moved to Oak Ridge, Tenn. The 
            Stricklands came to Kingsport in 1947. Mrs. Strickland was employed 
            by the Kingsport City School System. She taught Lincoln Elementary 
            and St. Paul's kindergarten and was the art teacher for many years 
            at John Sevier Middle School. Her teaching career was interrupted 
            only temporarily in 1950 to begin raising their three children. 
            Mrs. Strickland was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and was a past 
            president of the PTA, past president of the Lioness Club and a past 
            president of the Jaycettes. Mrs. Strickland retired in 1983 and she 
            and her husband spent several years traveling extensively. 
               
            She is survived by her daughter, two sons and their families: Susan 
            Strickland McFadden and Dr. Fred McFadden, Columbia, S.C., Michael 
            and Nicole Strickland, Knoxville, and Steven and Lindy Strickland, 
            Knoxville; grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew and Michael McFadden, 
            Samantha Strickland, Chase and Cole Strickland. 
            Calling hours are from 1 to 3 p.m. today at First Broad Street 
            United Methodist Church. 
            Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at the church with the 
            Rev. Jack Edwards and the Rev. Caryl Griffin officiating. 
            Entombment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

            Lora E. Woodward, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - Lora E. Woodward departed this world to embark upon the 
            greatest adventure of her life on Thursday (Nov. 22, 2001) at 
            Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport after a long, 
            courageous battle with cancer. 
            Lora was an avid bowler and was loved and known as "Mom" to all who 
            knew her. She was a wonderful mom and homemaker and loved to read 
            and paint. 
            She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, the Rev. Oscar 
            Woodward; and a son, Tony Woodward. 
            Surviving are five daughters and three sons-in-law, Flora Murray, 
            Big Stone Gap, Va., Sherry Pharris, Cookeville, Tenn., Robert and 
            Priscilla Stapleton, Big Stone Gap, Va., John and Rose "Susie" 
            Shepardson, Blountville, Troy and Carolyn Bramlett, Kingsport; five 
            sons and two daughters-in-law, Carlos Woodward, Houston, Texas, Kyle 
            Woodward and Marc Woodward, Big Stone Gap, Va., Ronald and Charlene 
            Woodward, Bluff City, and Dan and Anita Woodward Bramlett, Weber 
            City, Va.; one brother, Reed Griffin, Detroit, Mich., and Panama 
            City, Fla.; two sisters, Crystal Robins, Augusta, Ga., and Betty 
            Calton, Woodbury, Va.; 27 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren. 
            A memorial service will be announced at a later date. 
            In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rev. Oscar and Lora 
            Woodward Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 705, Kingsport, Tenn. 37662 for 
            kitchen supplies for the Christine LaGuardia Phillips Cancer Center 
            to be used for patients and families.
