            James C. Adams, 81, Church Hill.

            CHURCH HILL - James C. (J.C.) Adams, 81, of 1403 Old Union Road, 
            passed away Saturday (Nov. 24, 2001) at Church Hill Health Care and 
            Rehab Center following an extended illness. 
            Mr. Adams was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County, and was a 
            member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church. He was a retired farmer. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, William Connor and Cora 
            Overbey Adams. 
               
            Surviving are his wife, Delmar Kate Alley Adams, Church Hill; two 
            daughters, Barbara Hagood and Joyce Adams, both of Church Hill; one 
            son, James E. Adams. Church Hill; six grandchildren; 11 
            great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one sister, Mae Cox, 
            Surgoinsville. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Johnson Funeral Home, 
            Church Hill, and anytime at the home of his son, James E. Adams, 322 
            Lyons Avenue, Church Hill. 
            Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home 
            chapel with the Rev. James Phillips and the Rev. Paul Manis 
            officiating. 
            Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elm 
            Springs Cemetery. 

            Dale Barnette, 34, Church Hill.

            CHURCH HILL - Dale Ray Barnette, 34, 250 Christian Bend Road, died 
            Friday (Nov. 23, 2001) unexpectedly at his residence. 
            Born in Dayton, Ohio, he moved to Duffield, Va. in 1972 and came to 
            this area in 1975. Mr. Barnette was disabled. 
            He was preceded in death by his father, Kelly Barnette, and his 
            stepfather, Carl Savage. 
               
            Surviving are his mother, Georgia Childress Savage, Church Hill; his 
            daughter, Sylvia Barnette; his son, Oren Ray Barnette, both of 
            Kingsport; sister, Shelby Giolitto and husband, Norman, Dayton Ohio; 
            brothers, Gene Barnette, Surgoinsville, Harold Barnette and wife, 
            Chris, Church Hill, and Wayne Barnette and special friend, Diane, 
            Dayton, Ohio; a special nephew, Kelly Barnette; several nieces, 
            nephews and a host of friends. 
            Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Carter-Trent Funeral 
            Home, Church Hill. Friends may also call anytime at the 250 
            Christian Bend Road residence. 
            Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home 
            chapel with the Rev. Joe Monroe and the Rev. Raymond Hammond 
            officiating. 
            Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Flag Pond Church 
            Cemetery in Blackwater, Va. 
            Pallbearers will be family and friends. 

            W.D. Churchwell, 76, Rogersville.
               
            Graveside services for William David Churchwell, 76, Rogersville, 
            who went to be with the Lord Friday (Nov. 23, 2001), will be 
            conducted at 11:30 a.m. today at Liberty Hill Cemetery with the Rev. 
            Victor Wallace officiating. 
            Pallbearers will be James Martin, Buddy Martin, Chris Lovin, David 
            Bolton, Robbie Russell and Steve Pleasant. 
            Family and friends will meet at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Church 
            Hill, at 10:30 a.m. today to assemble for the procession to the 
            cemetery. 

            Betty A. Cooper, 78, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - Betty A. Cooper, 78, died Sunday morning (Nov. 25, 2001) 
            at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C., after a 
            brief illness. 
            Born in Springfield, Mo., she had resided in Kingsport most of her 
            life. She was a 1940 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School. Mrs. 
            Cooper retired in 1990 from the Sullivan County General Sessions 
            Court where she worked as a deputy clerk. 
            She was a member of Oakwood Forest Christian Church. 
            She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Gladys Abbott. 
               
            Survivors include her husband, James M. Cooper, Kingsport; a 
            daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Jim Rochester, Kingsport; a son 
            and daughter-in-law, John M. and Lynne Cooper, Cambridge, Mass.; a 
            sister, Pat Wolford, Kingsport; niece, Donna Jones; and nephew, Dr. 
            David Wolford. 
            Memorial contributions may be made to Oakwood Forest Christian 
            Church, 1713 E. Sevier Ave., Kingsport, Tenn. 37664.

            downtown Kingsport. 

            Kenneth Culbertson, 82, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - H. Kenneth "Cub" Culbertson, 82, died Saturday morning 
            (Nov. 24, 2001) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a 
            brief illness. 
            Born in Scott County, Va., he had resided in Kingsport since 1939. 
            Mr. Culbertson retired from Tennessee Eastman Company where he 
            worked in A.Y. and warehousing operations for 44 years. 
            He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. 
            His wife, Willie Taylor Culbertson; infant daughter, Judy Carole 
            Culbertson; parents, Harvey and Effie Lay Culbertson; two brothers, 
            J. Ernest Culbertson and John Jay Culbertson; and one sister, Ann 
            Ramey, preceded him in death. 
               
            Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Wayne Medlin, 
            Kingsport; a grandson, Kenneth Dale McLean, Kingsport; two nieces, 
            Martha Cox Woodall, Martha Ann Thompson; three nephews, Bill 
            Osborne, Bill Culbertson, Tom Ramey, three special caregivers, Beth 
            Keys, Susan Quillen, and Tina Jeffers. 
            Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Hill 
            Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Teague officiating. 
            Family will receive friends immediately following the service at the 
            cemetery, or anytime at 1576 Warpath Drive, Kingsport, Tenn. 37664. 
            The family will meet at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown 
            Kingsport, at 1 p.m. Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery. 
            Pallbearers will be Wayne Medlin, Del McClean, Billy Osborne, Danny 
            Lowery, Danny Medlin and Pat Moriarty. 
            Honorary pallbearers will be Earl Meade, Gib Tunnell, Clifford

            L.V. Delph, 68, Big Stone Gap, Va.

            BIG STONE GAP, Va. - L.V. Delph, 68, died Sunday (Nov. 25, 2001) in 
            Holston Valley Medical Center. 
            He had lived most of his life in Lee and Wise Counties, and was a 
            retired construction worker. 
            He was of the Holiness faith. 
            Survivors include his son, Ernest Delph, Big Stone Gap; and 
            daughters, Deborah Stidham, Stonega, Va., and Melissa Ward, Big 
            Stone Gap; stepson, Jerry Lee Pearson, Big Stone Gap; sister, Susie 
            Delph, Lee, Va.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Gilliam Funeral Home, 
            Big Stone Gap. 
            Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Cecil 
            Cemetery, Pennington Gap, Va., with the Rev. Frank McMahn 
            officiating. 
            Pallbearers will be family and friends. 
            Friends and family are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 10 
            a.m. Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery. 

            Ross Egan, 74, Nickelsville, Va.

            NICKELSVILLE, Va. - Ross Egan, 74, of Route 2, passed away Sunday 
            morning (Nov. 25, 2001) at his residence. 
            Survivors and arrangements are incomplete and will be announced 
            later by Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, Va. 

            Iona Lester, 80, Lebanon, Va.

            LEBANON, Va. - Iona Ferguson Lester, 80, went home to be with the 
            Lord Sunday (Nov. 25, 2001) in the Russell County Medical Center. 
            A lifelong resident of Russell County, she was a daughter of the 
            late Vaught and Bessie Taylor Ferguson. She was a retired employee 
            of the Russell Manufacturing Company with 26 years of service. 
            She was a member of the Bascom United Methodist Church. 
            She was preceded in death by two brothers, Vaught Peery Ferguson and 
            Roosevelt Ferguson; and one sister, Laverne Morrison. 
            Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Dolphus Lester; one daughter 
            and son-in-law, Brenda and Jerry Taylor, Lebanon; four grandsons, 
            Matthew, Joe, Jesse and Caleb Taylor, all of Lebanon; two 
            great-grandchildren, Tara Faith Taylor and Asa Reid Taylor, both of 
            Lebanon; two sisters, Frances Williams, Lebanon, and Audrey Taylor, 
            Kingsport; also several nieces and nephews. 
            Calling hours will be after 6 p.m. today at Bascom United Methodist 
            Church. 
            Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the church with the 
            Rev. Richard Hale and the Rev. Richie Neese officiating. 
            Burial will follow in the Russell Memorial Cemetery. 
            Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

            William Lewis, 76, Taylors Valley, Va.

            TAYLORS VALLEY, Va. - William Preston "Bill" Lewis, 76, died 
            Saturday (Nov. 24, 2001) at his residence. 
            A lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., he was the son of the 
            late Solomon E. and Lavinia Gentry Lewis. In addition to his 
            parents, he was also preceded in death by four sisters and three 
            brothers. 
            He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of the Rumley 
            Thompson American Legion Post No. 135. He was a retired employee 
            from the U.S. Postal Service and also a retired farmer. 
            Mr. Lewis was a former member of the board of directors of the 
            Damascus Senior Citizens. He was a member and past Master of the 
            Liberty Hall Lodge No. 104 AF&AM in Damascus, Va., and also a member 
            of the Royal Arch Chapter, E.H. Gill No. 50 in Bristol, Va. 
            He was a devoted member and deacon of the Walnut Grove Church of the 
            Brethren in Taylors Valley. In addition to his faithful service to 
            his local church, he also served in various positions on the 
            district level. 
            Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Dorothy Allen Blevins Lewis; 
            four daughters, Patricia Anderson and her husband, Ed, of Lynchburg, 
            Va., Susan Herndon and her husband, Fred, of Big Stone Gap, Va., 
            Cindy Davidson and her husband, Matt, of Apex, N.C., and Beth 
            Richardson and her husband, Mark, of Taylors Valley; three sisters, 
            Ruth Warden, of Laurel Bloomery, Tenn., Effie Price, of Taylors 
            Valley, and Florence Rowan, of Kingsport; two brothers, Jack Lewis, 
            of Taylors Valley, and Rodger Lewis, of Kingsport; six 
            grandchildren, Lori Anderson, William Anderson, Emily Davidson, 
            Matthew Davidson, Erin Herndon and Briana Richardson; and several 
            nieces and nephews. 
            Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Garrett Funeral Home 
            in Damascus, Va. 
            Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Walnut Grove 
            Church of the Brethren in Taylors Valley with Pastor Terry. R. 
            Johnson and Mr. Chad McMurray, ministers officiating. 
            Burial will follow in the Jackson-Lewis cemetery.

            William E. Manis, Rogersville.

            ROGERSVILLE - William E. Manis, born March 14, 1959, passed away 
            Saturday (Nov. 24, 2001). 
            He was a member of King James Baptist Church. 
            Surviving are three daughters, Angie, Leslie and Kimberly Manis, all 
            of Rogersville; mother, Elizabeth Brewer, Salem, W.Va.; one sister, 
            Velva Sharlene Taylor, Surgoinsville; four brothers, Gary E. Brewer, 
            Bean Station, Eugene Manis, Rogersville, Billy Manis, Maryland, and 
            George Manis, Maryville; several nieces and nephews, several 
            great-nieces and nephews; special friends, Jerry and Brenda Davis, 
            Debbie and Robert Collins, Steve and Marchell Shanks; special friend

            Hoyt McConnell, 96, Ft. Blackmore, Va.

            FT. BLACKMORE, Va. - Mr. Hoyt Kent "Cuz" McConnell, 96, entered into 
            eternal rest on Saturday, (Nov. 24, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical 
            Center. 
            Mr. McConnell was born in Scott County, Va., on July 7, 1905, son of 
            the late Robert Watson McConnell, M.D., and Annie Stallard 
            McConnell. 
            He was a member of Ft. Blackmore United Methodist Church. 
            He retired from the Tennessee Eastman Shops and Maintenance 
            Department in 1970 after 34 years of service. 
            He was preceded in death by his wife, Lakie Pierson McConnell; 
            sisters, Lois Benton, Ruth Trent and Evelyn Smith; and brother, Sam 
            McConnell. 
            He is survived by a sister, Clyde Irene Addington, Kingsport; and 
            brother, Robert Rhea McConnell, Kingsport; four nieces, Christine 
            Barker, Shirley Palmer, Helen House and Ruth Coley, all of 
            Kingsport; six nephews, Walton McConnell, Kingsport, John Fred 
            Trent, Cocoa, Fla., Dr. Joe Trent, Stamford, Conn., Dr. Bill 
            McConnell, Greenville, N.C., Douglas Benton, Biloxi, Miss., and Bill 
            Benton, Miami, Fla.; several great-nieces and nephews. 
            The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the 
            Ft. Blackmore United Methodist Church. 
            Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church with 
            the Rev. Dean Tibbs officiating. Music will be provided by the Ft. 
            Blackmore United Methodist Church Choir.

            KINGSPORT - Brandon Lynn Roberts, 23, passed away Saturday (Nov. 24, 
            2001). 
            He was the son of Lynn and Janet Roberts, of Kingsport, and Kathy 
            and Ken Zollman, of the Rock Springs community of Kingsport. He was 
            a 1996 graduate of Sullivan South. 
            Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by a sister, Amanda Sue Roberts; 
            his paternal grandparents, Elcer D. Roberts and Jessie Roberts; and 
            maternal grandfather, James Metcalf. 
               
            Survivors, other than his parents, are a sister, Jina Roberts Cox 
            and husband Jeff, of Harmony; two brothers, Nathan Zollman, Rock 
            Springs community of Kingsport, and Cody (Spud) Roberts, of 
            Kingsport; two nieces, Logan and Sydney Cox, of Kingsport; maternal 
            grandmother, Louise Metcalf, of Johnson City; maternal 
            stepgrandmother, Helen Zollman, of Kingsport; maternal 
            stepgrandparents, Bill and Lucy Ellis, of Church Hill; paternal

            COEBURN, Va. - Grace Vance, 83, passed away Saturday (Nov. 24, 2001) 
            at the Norton Community Hospital in Norton, Va. 
            She was of the Protestant faith. 
            She was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey Vance; one 
            daughter, Jean Addington; two sons, Harold Vance and Silas Vance. 
               
            Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy Meade of St Paul, Va., and 
            Virginia Bowlin of Abingdon, Va.; seven sons, Thomas Vance of 
            Norton, Va., Rex Vance of Gray, David Vance and Jerry Vance, both of 
            Wise, Va., Sammy Vance, Mike Vance and Edward Vance, all of Coeburn;

            Helen H. Wallen, 61, Mount Holly, N.C.

            MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. - Helen H. Wallen, 61, went home to be with the 
            Lord at 10 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 24, 2001) following a brief illness. 
            Helen was born in Kingsport where she resided until moving to 
            Gastonia, N.C., in 1987. She was a member of Midview Baptist Church 
            in Gastonia. 
            Helen was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. 
            She was preceded in death by her parents, James Allen and Lillian 
            Dempsey Hyatt; and one sister. 
            Surviving are her husband, Wayne Wallen, of the home; a daughter, 
            Desirae Simpson and husband, Marvin, Kingsport; sons, Junior Wallen, 
            Gastonia, Michael Ralph Wallen and wife, Lori, Gastonia; three 
            grandchildren, Jennifer, Anthony and Ashley; a sister, Juanita 
            Hammonds, Gate City, Va.; and a brother, Jack Hyatt, Gate City, Va.

            Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport. 
            Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home
