            CHURCH HILL - Graveside services for James C. (J.C.) Adams, 81, of 
            1403 Old Union Road, who passed away Saturday (Nov. 24, 2001), will 
            be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Elm Springs Cemetery.

            Dale Barnette, 34, Church Hill.

            CHURCH HILL - Dale Ray Barnette, 34, 250 Christian Bend Road, died 
            Friday (Nov. 23, 2001) unexpectedly at his residence. 
            Born in Dayton, Ohio, he moved to Duffield, Va. in 1972 and came to 
            this area in 1975. Mr. Barnette was disabled. 
            He was preceded in death by his father, Kelly Barnette, and his 
            stepfather, Carl Savage. 
               
            Surviving are his mother, Georgia Childress Savage, Church Hill; his 
            daughter, Sylvia Barnette; his son, Oren Ray Barnette, both of 
            Kingsport; sister, Shelby Giolitto and husband, Norman, Dayton, 
            Ohio; brothers, Gene Barnette, Surgoinsville, Harold Barnette and 
            wife, Chris, Church Hill, and Wayne Barnette and special friend, 
            Diane, Dayton, Ohio; a special nephew, Kelly Barnette; several 
            nieces, nephews and a host of friends. 
            Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Carter-Trent Funeral 
            Home, Church Hill. Friends may also call anytime at the 250 
            Christian Bend Road residence. 
            Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home 
            chapel with the Rev. Joe Monroe and the Rev. Raymond Hammond 
            officiating. 
            Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Flag Pond Church 
            Cemetery in Blackwater, Va.

            Delores Caudill, 70, Norton, Va.

            NORTON, Va. - Delores Rose Caudill, 70, died Saturday (Nov. 24, 
            2001) at her residence on Thackers Branch Road. 
            Born in Kentucky, she resided in the Norton area for many years. She 
            was of the Pentecostal faith. 
            Surviving are her daughter, Patsy J. Hall, Norton; sons, Daniel 
            Bowen and Sanford Hamilton, both of Norton; seven grandchildren; and 
            three great-grandchildren. 
            Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Hagy & Fawbush 
            Funeral Home in Norton. 
            Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home 
            chapel. 
            Graveside committal services will be conducted Wednesday in the 
            Laurel Grove Cemetery. 

            Betty A. Cooper, 78, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - Betty A. Cooper, 78, died Sunday morning (Nov. 25, 2001) 
            at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C., after a 
            brief illness. 
            Born in Springfield, Mo., she had resided in Kingsport most of her 
            life. She was a 1940 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School. Mrs. 
            Cooper retired in 1990 from the Sullivan County General Sessions 
            Court where she worked as a deputy clerk. 
            She was a member of Oakwood Forest Christian Church. 
            She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Gladys Abbott. 
               
            Survivors include her husband, James M. Cooper, Kingsport; a 
            daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Jim Rochester, Kingsport; a son 
            and daughter-in-law, John M. and Lynne Cooper, Cambridge, Mass.; a 
            sister, Pat Wolford, Kingsport; niece, Donna Jones; and nephew, Dr. 
            David Wolford. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Chapel, 
            downtown. 
            Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home 
            chapel with Ed Clevinger, minister, and Hugh Thompson, minister, 
            officiating. 
            Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oak 
            Hill Cemetery.

            Graveside services for H. Kenneth "Cub" Culbertson, 82, Kingsport, 
            who died Saturday morning (Nov. 24, 2001), will be conducted at 2 
            p.m. today at Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Teague 
            officiating. 
            Family will receive friends immediately following the service at the 
            cemetery, or anytime at 1576 Warpath Drive, Kingsport, Tenn. 37664. 
            The family will meet at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown 
            Kingsport, at 1 p.m. today to go in procession to the cemetery.

            Evelyn Deatherage, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - Evelyn Deatherage went to be with the Lord Sunday (Nov. 
            25, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center after a lengthy illness. 
            Born in Greene County, she had resided in Kingsport most of her 
            life. She retired from Tennessee Eastman Company after 35 years of 
            service. 
            She was a member of Oakwood Forest Christian Church. 
            She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Deatherage; 
            parents, George W. and Grace Adams; two sisters, Imogene Gilliam and 
            Lenice Staten; a brother-in-law, Fred Gilliam; and a niece, Sharon 
            Prescott. 
            Surviving are two nieces, Pat Osborne, Gray, and Sheila Schwiff, San 
            Antonio, Texas; nephew, Phillip Gilliam, Gray; brother-in-law, 
            Gordon Staten, San Antonio, Texas; special cousins, Lizzie and John 
            Fox; and several other cousins. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Chapel 
            downtown. 
            Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home 
            chapel with Ed Clevinger, minister, officiating.

            Susie Bash Delph, 90, Rose Hill, Va.

            ROSE HILL, Va. - Susie Bash Delph, 90, died Monday (Nov. 26, 2001) 
            at her residence. 
            A lifelong resident of Lee County, Va., she was of the Baptist 
            faith. 
            She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Dee Delph; her 
            parents; six sons; and one daughter. 
            Surviving are three sons, Douglas and Daw Delph, Rose Hill, and 
            Jimmy Delph, Jonesville, Va.; one daughter, Ollie Delph, Morristown; 
            11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one 
            great-great-granddaughter; four stepgrandchildren; one 
            stepgreat-grandson; sister-in-law, Ethel Bell, Westminster, Md., 
            whom she raised; and several nieces and nephews. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Arney-Mullins 
            Funeral Home in Rose Hill. 
            Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home 
            chapel with the Rev. Wayne Lawson officiating.

            Morelock Cemetery in Jonesville, Va.

            Issac Edwards, 83, Jonesville, Va.

            JONESVILLE, Va. - Issac Sherman Edwards, 83, died Monday (Nov. 26, 
            2001) at Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. 
            Born in Stickleyville, Va., he had been a resident of Lee County, 
            Va., his entire life. He was retired from Tennessee Eastman in 
            Kingsport. 
            He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II, serving as a 
            Tech. Sergeant during combat in Germany. He was awarded the Purple 
            Heart, the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and several other honors. 

            He was of the Methodist faith. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Eliza and Ben Edwards; two 
            sisters, Emmer Melton and Mattie Edwards; three brothers, Howard 
            Edwards, Willard Edwards and Robert Edwards. 
            Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Josh Edwards, of the home; one 
            brother, Cliva Lee Edwards and wife Merle, Stickleyville, Va.; 
            sisters, Ruth Massengill, Kingsport, Nannie Mullins, Elizabethton, 
            Fern Hart and husband Carl, and Eula Hart, all of South Carolina; 
            two sisters-in-law, Leona and Lucille Edwards; special 
            sister-in-law, Golden Musick, Dryden, Va.; several nieces and 
            nephews and a host of friends. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Province Funeral 
            Home, Pennington Gap, Va. 
            Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary of 
            the funeral home with Dr. Charles D. Ledger officiating. 
            Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lee Memorial 
            Gardens in Woodway, Va. 
            Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:30 
            Thursday to go to the cemetery. 
            Nephews will serve as pallbearers. 

            Ross Egan Sr., 74, Nickelsville, Va.

            NICKELSVILLE, Va. - Ross Robert Egan Sr., 74, went to be with the 
            Lord on Sunday (Nov. 25, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center 
            after a brief illness. 
            He was born on Oct. 5, 1927 at Fort Blackmore, Va., to Patton Egan 
            and Dora Ashworth Egan. 
            Ross served in the Navy from 1946 to 1948, then moved to Cleveland, 
            Ohio, where he worked for LTV Steel for 40 years. After retiring in 
            1989, he moved back home to Virginia where he enjoyed working on his 
            farm. 
            Mr. Egan was of the Methodist faith. 
            He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and was loved by all 
            his family. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Fred, 
            Glen, Eckel and Earnest Egan. 
               
            Surviving are his wife, Lena Egan; daughter, Rebecca Lucinda Egan, 
            both of the home; one son, Ross Robert Egan Jr., and grandson, 
            William J. Egan, both of Nickelsville, Va.; two sisters, Myrtle 
            Chapman and husband Don, Hiltons, Va., and Virginia Lark and husband 
            Fred, Chardon, Ohio; many nieces and nephews. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Colonial Funeral home, 
            Weber City, Va., and anytime at the residence. 
            Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home 
            chapel with the Rev. Charles Rhoton officiating. 
            Music will be provided by The Way of the Cross Singers. 
            Burial will be at Holston View Cemetery with military graveside 
            services conducted by the Charles DeWitt Byrd VFW Post No. 3382.

            Billy E. Keith, 65, Greeneville.

            GREENEVILLE - Billy E. Keith, 65, 477 New Hope Road, Tusculum 
            community, died Sunday morning (Nov. 25, 2001) at the home of his 
            son, Bobby Keith. 
            He retired from Hurd Lock and served in the U.S. Army. He was a 
            member of Doak Ruritan Club and the AARP. 
            He formerly attended Oak Grove Baptist Church. 
            He was the son of the late Will and Mary Hensley Keith, and was 
            preceded in death by a brother, Harold Keith. 
            Bill had a heart transplant in July 1989 and was a very active 
            person until 1998. The past four years he had fought a long, hard 
            battle to live for his family but when God knew he'd suffered all he 
            could bear, He called him home. 
            Surviving are his son, Bobby Keith; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and 
            Pete Hensley, Greeneville; two grandchildren, Chris Keith and spouse 
            Lora, Greeneville, and Emily Keith, of the home; one 
            great-grandchild, Winter Keith; three brothers and four 
            sisters-in-law, Claude and Thelma Keith, Bruce and Gay Keith, Earl 
            and Lillian Keith, Greeneville, and Kay Keith, Huntsville, Ala.; two 
            sisters, Betty Lamb and Norma Smith, Kingsport; several nieces and 
            nephews; and a special friend, Gwen Fox. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Kiser Funeral Home, 
            Greeneville. 
            Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home 
            chapel with the Rev. Rex Brown officiating. 
            Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oak Grove Cemetery, 
            Tusculum. It is requested that family and friends meet at the 
            funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday to go in procession to the 
            cemetery.

            William E. Manis, Rogersville.

            ROGERSVILLE - Services for William E. Manis, born March 14, 1959, 
            who passed away Saturday (Nov. 24, 2001), will be conducted at 2 
            p.m. today in the chapel of Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville, 
            with the Rev. Bill Belvins officiating. 
            Interment will follow in the Sizemore Cemetery. 

            Hoyt McConnell, 96, Ft. Blackmore, Va.

            FT. BLACKMORE, Va. - Mr. Hoyt Kent "Cuz" McConnell, 96, entered into 
            eternal rest on Saturday, (Nov. 24, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical 
            Center. 
            Mr. McConnell was born in Scott County, Va., on July 7, 1905, son of 
            the late Robert Watson McConnell, M.D., and Annie Stallard 
            McConnell. 
            He was a member of Ft. Blackmore United Methodist Church. 
            He retired from the Tennessee Eastman Shops and Maintenance 
            Department in 1970 after 34 years of service. 
            He was preceded in death by his wife, Lakie Pierson McConnell; 
            sisters, Lois Benton, Ruth Trent and Evelyn Smith; and brother, Sam 
            McConnell. 
            He is survived by a sister, Clyde Irene Addington, Kingsport; and 
            brother, Robert Rhea McConnell, Kingsport; four nieces, Christine 
            Barker, Shirley Palmer, Helen House and Ruth Coley, all of 
            Kingsport; six nephews, Walton McConnell, Kingsport, John Fred 
            Trent, Cocoa, Fla., Dr. Joe Trent, Stamford, Conn., Dr. Bill 
            McConnell, Greenville, N.C., Douglas Benton, Biloxi, Miss., and Bill 
            Benton, Miami, Fla.; several great-nieces and nephews. 
            The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the 
            Ft. Blackmore United Methodist Church. 
            Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church with 
            the Rev. Dean Tibbs officiating. Music will be provided by the Ft. 
            Blackmore United Methodist Church Choir. 
            Burial will follow the services at the McConnell Cemetery, Ft.

            Michael Rutherford, 42, Big Stone Gap, Va.

            BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Michael David Rutherford, 42, passed away 
            Sunday (Nov. 25, 2001) at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap. 
            He had lived in Big Stone Gap and Keokee, Va., most of his life. He 
            was a maintenance foreman for the Town of Wise. 
            He was a Boy Scout leader and a minor league baseball coach in Big 
            Stone Gap. He was a past member of the UMWA. 
            He was a deacon at Beach Grove Freewill Baptist Church. 
            Surviving are his wife, Georgia Rutherford, Big Stone Gap; father 
            and mother, Roy Eugene Rutherford and Gladys Rutherford, Big Stone 
            Gap; sons, Craig Rutherford, Corey Rutherford and Brent Rutherford, 
            all of the home; brothers, Roger Rutherford, Wise, Va., Eddie 
            Rutherford, Jonesville, Va., Larry Rutherford, Jimmy Rutherford and 
            Doug Rutherford, all of Keokee, Va., Johnny Rutherford, Ben Hur, 
            Va., and Ricky Rutherford, Keokee, Va.; sisters, Glenda Rowe,

            Bertha Shanks, 94, Rogersville.

            ROGERSVILLE - Bertha Grace Horne Shanks, 94, Heritage Manor Nursing 
            Home, went to be with the Lord at 7:20 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 25, 2001) 
            with her family by her side after a brief illness. 
            She was a member of Kincaid United Methodist Church for many years. 
            She and her late husband, Andy, were owners and operators of Shanks' 
            Store and Andrew Shanks' Milling Co. in Stanley Valley. She was also 
            a homemaker and a loving mother and grandmother. 
            She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Jackson Shanks; 
            parents, John "Jake" Horne and Ethel Herndon Horne; son, Robert L. 
            (Bob) Shanks; one sister, Mary Estella Horne McPeek; three brothers, 
            Ralph L. Horne, George W. Horne and Robert Amit Horne; one 
            son-in-law, Raymond McCoy. 
            Surviving are sons and daughters, Ralph Hugh (Abner) Shanks and 
            Lois, Rogersville, Andrew (Jack) and Jean Shanks, Surgoinsville, Ann 
            McCoy, Surgoinsville, Dorothy and Chuck Johnson, Surgoinsville, and 
            Mary and J.C. Ferrell, Rogersville; 17 grandchildren; 31 
            great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Jake

            L. Raymond Smith, 71, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - Loyed Raymond Smith, 71, went home to be with the Lord 
            Sunday evening (Nov. 25, 2001) at the Indian Path Medical Center 
            after an extended illness. 
            He was a native and lifelong resident of Hawkins County and had 
            lived in the Kingsport area for the past year. 
            He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army as 
            Cpl. 
            Raymond attended Christians Bend Freewill Baptist Church in Church 
            Hill. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Verdie Simpson 
            Smith; brothers, Billy Tilman Smith and Calvin Smith. 
               
            Survivors include his wife, Ella Marie Smith, Kingsport; two sons 
            and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Tonia Smith, Church Hill, and Rece 
            Smith, of Virginia; a daughter, Robin Smith, Church Hill; four 
            grandchildren, Brittany Smith, Ashley Cowen, Allen Michael Bowman 
            and Anthony Smith; one great-grandchild-to-be; five brothers, D.L. 
            Smith, Kingsport, Junior Smith, Hughie Smith, Earl Smith, all of 
            Church Hill, and Rosavelt Smith, Rogersville; two sisters, Elsie 
            Caldwell and Lotus Arnold, Church Hill; and several nieces and 
            nephews.

            Robert Turner, 87, Coeburn, Va.

            COEBURN, Va. - Robert Franklin Turner, 87, died Sunday (Nov. 25, 
            2001) at St. Mary's Hospital in Norton, Va. 
            Mr. Turner was a retired coal miner, a member and past president of 
            the Coeburn Lions Club. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War 
            II, and a member of Blackman Chapel AME Zion Church. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Alexander "Sandy'' 
            and Emma Pierce Turner; two sisters and four brothers. 
            Surviving are his wife, Celestine F. Turner; a son Chris Edward 
            Turner, Coeburn; a brother, John Henry Turner, Los Angeles, Calif.; 
            three sisters, Annie Ruth Watermann and Mary Elizabeth Turner, both 
            of Coeburn, and Clara B. Jackson, Kingsport; and a host of nephews 
            and nieces. 
            Calling hours are after 6 p.m. Wednesday at Estes Funeral Home, 
            Coeburn. 
            Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home 
            chapel with the Rev. Sandra L. Jones officiating.

            Helen H. Wallen, 61, Mount Holly, N.C.

            MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. - Services for Helen H. Wallen, 61, who went home 
            to be with the Lord at 10 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 24, 2001), will be 
            conducted at 1 p.m. today in the chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral 
            Home, downtown Kingsport, with the Rev. Claude Babb officiating.
