            Walter Barker, 71, Hiltons, Va.

            HILTONS, Va. - Walter Scott Barker, 71, Route 1, departed this life 
            late Saturday (Nov. 24, 2001) at his residence. 
            He was a native of Scott County, Va., a veteran of the U.S. Army and 
            a retired farmer. His property was always open for people who loved 
            to hunt. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Barker and Hazel 
            Larkey Barker. 
            Surviving are his son, James Barker, Duffield, Va.; his uncle, 
            Thurman Barker, Kingsport; several cousins and a host of friends. 
            Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. 
            Vernon United Methodist Church Cemetery, Hiltons, Va., with Preacher 
            Nat Baker officiating. 
            Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., is in charge of 
            arrangements.

            CHURCH HILL - Graveside services for Dale Ray Barnette, 34, 250 
            Christian Bend Road, who died Friday (Nov. 23, 2001), will be at 1 
            p.m. today at Flag Pond Church Cemetery in Blackwater, Va. 
            Pallbearers will be family and friends.

            Graveside services for Betty A. Cooper, 78, Kingsport, who died 
            Sunday morning (Nov. 25, 2001), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today 
            at Oak Hill Cemetery.

            KINGSPORT - Services for Evelyn Deatherage, who went to be with the 
            Lord Sunday (Nov. 25, 2001), will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in 
            the Hamlett-Dobson Chapel, downtown, with Ed Clevinger, minister, 
            officiating. 
            Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. 

            Ross Egan Sr., 74, Nickelsville, Va.
               
            Services for Ross Robert Egan Sr., 74, of Nickelsville, Va., who 
            went to be with the Lord on Sunday (Nov. 25, 2001), will be 
            conducted at 1 p.m. today in the chapel of Colonial Funeral Home, 
            Weber City, Va., with the Rev. Charles Rhoton officiating. 
            Music will be provided by The Way of the Cross Singers. 
            Burial will be at Holston View Cemetery with military graveside 
            services conducted by the Charles DeWitt Byrd VFW Post No. 3382. 
            Pallbearers will be Ronnie Dye, Steve Lovelace, Josh Skeens, Chris 
            Skeens, Josh Goad and Bob Ford. 

            Willard Fields, 82, Castlewood, Va.

            CASTLEWOOD, Va. - Willard B. Fields, 82, died Tuesday (Nov. 27, 
            2001) in the Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon, Va. 
            A lifelong resident of Russell County, he was a son of the late 
            Robert E. Lee Fields and Rhoda Salyers Fields. A carpenter, he was a 
            member of the Grassy Creek Union Church. 
            He was preceded in death by his wife, Cleo Fields; one grandson, 
            Tony Ring; and several brothers and sisters. 
            Surviving are four daughters and sons-in-law, Nina and Charles Ring, 
            Castlewood, Va., Dorothy and Gene Jessee, Lebanon, Va., Janice and 
            Bobby Horne, Nickelsville, Va., and Joyce and Wayne Osborne, 
            Castlewood, Va.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two 
            great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Maxie Steadman, Kingsport, 
            and Rosie Mae Couch, Dante, Va.; and a special friend, Elizabeth 
            Clark, Lebanon, Va. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Combs Funeral Service in 
            Lebanon, Va. 
            Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home 
            chapel with the Rev. Tom Edwards officiating. 
            Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Grassy Creek Community 
            Cemetery. Those wishing to go in procession to the cemetery are 
            requested to be at the funeral home by 10:15 a.m. Thursday. 
            Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. 

            Hoyt McConnell, 96, Ft. Blackmore, Va.

            FT. BLACKMORE, Va. - Services for Mr. Hoyt Kent "Cuz" McConnell, 96, 
            who entered into eternal rest on Saturday, (Nov. 24, 2001), will be 
            conducted at 2 p.m. today at Ft. Blackmore United Methodist Church 
            with the Rev. Dean Tibbs officiating. 
            Music will be provided by the Ft. Blackmore United Methodist Church 
            Choir. 
            The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today at the 
            church. 
            Burial will follow the services at the McConnell Cemetery, Ft. 
            Blackmore. 
            Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

            Alice McCoy, 60, Eidson, Tenn.

            EIDSON, Tenn. - Alice Jean McCoy, 60, born July 6, 1941, departed 
            this life Monday (Nov. 26, 2001). 
            She was a member of Compromise Baptist Church until death. 
            She was preceded in death by her father, Dewey McCoy Sr., Kingsport, 
            Reatha Hurst, West Carrollton, Ohio; grandparents, Della Green McCoy 
            and Charlie McCoy, Viola and Russell Mason of West Carrollton, Ohio; 
            aunts, Ann Smith McCoy, Nashville, Christine (Mrs. J.E.) Mills, 
            Concord, Tenn., Grace McKinney, Miamisburg, Ohio; uncle, Donald 
            McCoy, Mount Carmel. 
            Surviving are a brother, Dewey Roger (Sonny) McCoy and wife, Rita, 
            West Carrollton, Ohio; stepmother, Ruth McCoy, Kingsport; brother, 
            Donald Wayne Chism, Venice, Fla.; aunts, Mrs. Gerald (Betty) Lawson, 
            Anderson, Ind., Pauline Molton and husband, Charles (Chuck), 
            Knoxville, Edith Bear and husband, Jay, Jonesborough, Donald McCoy's

            McCoy Cemetery in the Chinquipin community of Hancock County, Tenn., 
            with the Rev. J.C. Lawson and the Rev. Chuck McCoy officiating.

            Michael Rutherford, 42, Big Stone Gap, Va.

            BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Michael David Rutherford, 42, passed away 
            Sunday (Nov. 25, 2001) at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap. 
            He had lived in Big Stone Gap and Keokee, Va., most of his life. He 
            was a maintenance foreman for the Town of Wise. 
            He was a Boy Scout leader and a minor league baseball coach in Big 
            Stone Gap. He was a past member of the UMWA. 
            He was a deacon at Beach Grove Freewill Baptist Church. 
            Surviving are his wife, Georgia Rutherford, Big Stone Gap; father 
            and mother, Roy Eugene Rutherford and Gladys Rutherford, Big Stone 
            Gap; sons, Craig Rutherford, Corey Rutherford and Brent Rutherford, 
            all of the home; brothers, Roger Rutherford, Wise, Va., Eddie 
            Rutherford, Jonesville, Va., Larry Rutherford, Jimmy Rutherford and 
            Doug Rutherford, all of Keokee, Va., Johnny Rutherford, Ben Hur, 
            Va., and Ricky Rutherford, Keokee, Va.; sisters, Glenda Rowe, 
            Stickleyville, Va., Nancy Garrett, Big Stone Gap, Sandra Johnson, 
            Pennington Gap, Va., and Catherine Garrett, Fowlerville, Mich.; and 
            several nieces and nephews. 
            Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today in the American Legion 
            Cemetery, Big Stone Gap. 
            Family and friends are asked to assemble at Gilliam Funeral Home at 
            10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. 
            Pallbearers will be his brothers. 
            Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Bledsoe, Robert Daughtery, Sam 
            Jessee, Brian Dorton, Freddie Dorton, Shawn Hampton and Jim Collier.

            Jennifer Sexton, 31, Coeburn, Va.

            COEBURN, Va. - Jennifer Lynn Sexton, 31, passed away Monday (Nov. 
            26, 2001) at the Fort Washington Hospital, Fort Washington, Md. 
            Surviving are her parents, Ellis and Erma Gibson Sexton; her 
            paternal grandmother, Dorothy Sexton, Coeburn, Va.; a special aunt, 
            Geneva Sexton, Coeburn, Va.; several aunts, uncles and cousins. 
            Calling hours are after 6 p.m. today at Sturgill Funeral Home, 
            Coeburn, Va. 
            Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home 
            chapel with the Rev. Joe Dearry officiating.

            Bertha Shanks, 94, Rogersville.

            ROGERSVILLE - Graveside services for Bertha Grace Horne Shanks, 94, 
            Heritage Manor Nursing Home, who went to be with the Lord at 7:20 
            p.m. Sunday (Nov. 25, 2001), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at 
            Highland Cemetery. 
            Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville, is in charge of the 
            arrangements. 

            Doyle Shelton, 42, Pennington Gap, Va.

            PENNINGTON GAP, Va. - Doyle Shelton, 42, died Sunday (Nov. 25, 2001) 
            at his home. 
            Born in Harlan, Ky., on Feb. 19, 1959, he had been a resident of Lee 
            County, Va., most of his life. He was a carpenter for Old Virginia 
            Log Homes in Pennington Gap, Va., and was of the Methodist belief. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Buford Perry and Eula 
            Tonker Shelton. 
            Surviving are one daughter, Brandy Fleenor, Jonesville, Va.; three 
            granddaughters, Sasshena, Brittany and Cathrine Fleenor; two 
            brothers, David Shelton, Jonesville, Va., and Rick Shelton, 
            Yadkinsville, N.C.; one sister, Jane Ely, Yadkinsville, N.C. 
            Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Province Funeral Home 
            Sanctuary, Pennington Gap, Va., with the Rev. J.D. Owens 
            officiating. 
            Burial will follow at Millers Chapel Cemetery in Jonesville, Va. 

            L. Raymond Smith, 71, Kingsport.
               
            Services for Loyed Raymond Smith, 71, of Kingsport, who went home to 
            be with the Lord Sunday evening (Nov. 25, 2001), will be conducted 
            at 11 a.m. today in the chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home with the 
            Rev. Ronnie Arnold officiating. 
            Graveside services with full military honors conducted by the VFW 
            Charles DeWitt Byrd Post No. 3382 of Kingsport will follow in the 
            East Lawn Memorial Park in the Garden of Memories. Taps will be 
            played by Brian Rick. 
            Pallbearers will be his son, Lloyd Smith, and friends, Clifford 
            Boggs, Tracy Arnold, Kevin Arnold, Tony Fields and Rocky Carey. 

            Leona Craft Wright, 93, Jenkins, Ky.

            JENKINS, Ky. - Leona Craft Wright, 93 years, 10 months and 6 days, 
            died Tuesday (Nov. 27, 2001) at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional 
            Hospital in Whitesburg, Ky. 
            Mrs. Wright taught in the Letcher County School System for 24 years. 
            She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, member of the 
            Letcher County Senior Citizens Club, and a Kentucky Colonel. 
            She was a member of the McRoberts Old Regular Baptist Church. 
            Mrs. Wright was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Elder 
            James Lewis Wright; her parents, John H. Craft and Lydia Margaret 
            Kincer Craft; two sisters, Arlena Adams and Arminta Craft; two 
            brothers, Charlie Craft and Bill Craft. 
            Surviving are her daughters, Jimmie Kathleen (Ray) Adkins, Kent, 
            Ohio, Margaret Jocelyn (Ben) Adams, Quartzsite, Ariz., Polly Arlene 
            (Joseph) Bittrich, Burdine, Ky., Glenna Theresa (Bob) Matney, 
            Jenkins, Ky., Lura Jane (preceded in death by Jim) Bright, Jenkins, 
            Ky., Shelia Faye (Pat) Whitaker, Pikeville, Ky.; sons, Thomas Gene 
            (Norma) Wright, Cromona, Ky., John Andrew (Dallas) Wright, Jenkins, 
            Ky., Jesse Wayne (Esther) Wright, Jenkins, Ky.; sisters, Arzona 
            Kincer, Mayking, Ky.; brother, Dave L. Craft, Mayking, Ky.; 23 
            grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and expecting one additional 
            great-grandchild; one great-great-grandchild; and, for their loving 
            dedication, compassion and care, we have adopted two new members 
            into our family, Elaine Mullins and Starlene Yeary, as mother called 
            them, her angels. 
            Calling hours will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at McRoberts Old 
            Regular Baptist Church and from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Thornton 
            Union Church in Mayking. 
            Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Thornton Union Church 
            with Elder Jim T. Caudill and Elder Clayton Montgomery officiating. 
            Burial will be in Payne Gap Memorial Gardens in Payne Gap, Ky. 
            Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
