            APPALACHIA, Va. - Sadie S. Bakos, 92, passed away Saturday (Dec. 1, 
            2001) at her residence in Elizabeth, N.J. 
            She had lived most of her life in Elizabeth, N.J., and was formerly 
            of Wise County, Va. 
            She was the daughter of the late Louis and Esther Bakos. She was 
            employed as a baker for 25 years with the A. & P. Bakery in Newark, 
            N.J., before retiring in 1974. 
            Surviving are two sisters, Irene Bevilacqua and Viola Bakos, both of 
            Elizabeth, N.J. 
            Calling hours will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Roy A. Green 
            Funeral Home in Appalachia. 
            Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the American 
            Legion Cemetery with the Rev. Tony Nunley officiating. 

            Mary Frances Ball, 62, Rogersville.

            ROGERSVILLE - Graveside services for Mary Frances Ball, 62, who went 
            to be with the Lord Tuesday (Dec. 4, 2001), will be held at 11 a.m. 
            today at Highland Cemetery.

            Howard T. Barrett, 54, Surgoinsville.
               
            Services for Howard T. Barrett, 54, of 303 Amis Chapel Road, 
            Surgoinsville, who entered into rest on Sunday (Dec. 2, 2001), will 
            be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Johnson Funeral Home, 
            Church Hill, with the Rev. Ralph Hammonds, the Rev. Harold Head and 
            the Rev. Dee Hicks officiating. 
            Burial will follow in Kite Cemetery. 
            Special friends will serve as pallbearers, Harry S. Barrett Jr., 
            Richard Britton, Raymond Smith, Jason Bruner, H.K. Good and Terry

            Robert E. Bass, 81, Rogersville.

            ROGERSVILLE - Robert E. Bass, 81, went to be with the Lord 8:15 a.m. 
            Wednesday (Dec. 5, 2001) at Hawkins County Memorial Hospital 
            following an extended illness. 
            He was a member of Westview Baptist Church. He was a well-known 
            painter and decorator for 45 years. He was a veteran of World War 
            II, having served in the U.S. Army. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Bleve and Ollie Bass; 
            grandson, Ricky Bass; and granddaughter, Kathy Bass. 
               
            Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Barbara Bass, of the home; three 
            sons, Robert L. Bass and wife Buena, Bulls Gap, Dale Bass and wife 
            Ellen, Columbus, Ga., and Larry Neil Bass and wife Sandra K., 
            Rogersville; grandsons, Robert Lee Bass Jr. and wife Debbie, 
            Rogersville, Ron Surrett and wife Lisa, Talbolt, Tenn., Larry N. 
            Bass Jr., Rogersville; granddaughters, Brenda Giefings, Columbus, 
            Ga., Patricia Chappel, Columbus, Ga., Rebecca K. Trent, Bulls Gap,

            Oscar Begley, 57, Weber City, Va.

            WEBER CITY, Va. - Oscar "Tom" Claude Begley, 57, entered into rest 
            Tuesday (Dec. 4, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center. 
            He was born in Scott County, Va., on Sept. 1, 1944 to the late 
            Calles Palmer Begley and Lizzie Laura Begley. 
            Including his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ann 
            Oquinn and Ina Begley; one brother, Charles Laney. 
               
            Survivors include his wife, Maria Begley, Weber City, Va.; son and 
            daughter-in-law, Tommy and Sarah Begley, Weber City, Va.; two 
            sisters, Gladys Babb, Coeburn, Va., and Wanda Darnell, Dungannon, 
            Va.; two brothers, Jimmie Begley, Dallas, N.C., and Cecil Begley, 
            Dungannon, Va.; one granddaughter, Celina Reynae Begley; several 
            nieces and nephews. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today in the Juanita S. Falin 
            Chapel of the Gate City Funeral Home. 
            Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the Gene Falin 
            Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Charlie Taylor. 
            Burial will follow the service at Begley Cemetery, Ft. Blackmore, 
            Va.

            Michael C. Brooks, 33, Big Stone Gap, Va.

            BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Michael C. "Mike" Brooks, 33, died Wednesday 
            (Dec. 5, 2001) at Wellmont-Lonesome Pine Hospital. 
            He was born in Baltimore, Md., and lived most of his life in Big 
            Stone Gap. He was a former roofer for Oakwood Homes in Salisbury, 
            N.C., and was a carpenter and a mechanic. 
            He was preceded in death by his brother, J.C. Brooks. 
            Surviving are two sons, Mikey Barnette and Jimmy Barnette, 
            Kingsport; his parents, David J. and Carolyn J. Clay Brooks; sister, 
            Jaclyn Arlee Brooks, Norton, Va.; maternal grandmother, Ollie Smith, 
            Appalachia, Va., and paternal grandmother, Florence Brooks, 
            Baltimore, Md.; one niece and one nephew; and fianceé, Tina Vaughn, 
            Appalachia, Va. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 6 to 8 p.m. 
            Saturday at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap. 
            Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home

            William Campbell, 84, Nickelsville, Va.

            NICKELSVILLE, Va. - William Charles Campbell, 84, entered into rest 
            on Tuesday (Dec. 4, 2001) at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, 
            Mountain Home, Tenn., after a lengthy illness. 
            Mr. Campbell was born on Oct. 5, 1917 and was a lifelong resident of 
            Scott County, Va. 
            Mr. Campbell was a World War II veteran whose date of induction was 
            May 3, 1941. He served in the battles and campaigns in Normandy, 
            Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. His medals and 
            citations were the Purple Heart Medal Co.79 HQ 29th Division, 44 
            American Defense Service Medal, European African Medal, Middle 
            Eastern Service Medal with Bronze Arrowhead, Distinguished Unit 
            Badge Go.33 HQ FUSA 44. He was a radio operator, Lou Speed 776 and 
            MKM Machine Gun. 
            He also received World War II Victory Medal at Gate City, Va., on 
            Oct. 29, 1947 and was discharged Oct. 21, 1946. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Ella Campbell. 
            Including his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother; 
            three sisters; one infant son and two granddaughters. 
               
            Survivors include his wife, Lillian Virginia Campbell, Nickelsville, 
            Va.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Mary Campbell, 
            Nickelsville, Va., Mike and Donna Campbell, Nickelsville, Va., 
            Earnie and Amy Campbell, Gate City, Va., and Johnny and Dana 
            Campbell, Gate City, Va.; six daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and 
            Emit, Jr. Burke, Nickelsville, Va., Barbara and Clarence Henley, Ft. 
            Worth, Texas, Janet Hill, Gate City, Va., Mary and Ted Austin, 
            Norton, Va., Carolyn and Larry Lane, Bristol, Tenn., Brenda and 
            Terry Smith, Nickelsville, Va.; 18 grandchildren and five 
            great-grandchildren; brother, Kyle Campbell, Kingsport; sisters, 
            Anna Bishop and Evelyn Hughes, both of Kingsport, and Gladys 
            Gillespie, Gate City, Va., Rhea Moore and Carrie North VanStrand, 
            both of Florida.

            Bob Depew, 66, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - Robert (Bob) Morgan Depew, 66, 3313 Princeton Road, died 
            late Monday (Dec. 3, 2001) at his home. 
            A lifelong resident of Kingsport, he was a graduate of Sullivan High 
            School and was of the Methodist faith. 
            Bob was a well-known automobile and body mechanic. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Dana and Josie Davenport 
            Depew; and a brother-in-law, James L. Dixon. 
               
            Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Shirley Welsh Depew; one 
            daughter, Diane Depew Melton and son-in-law, Jeff; one son, Roger A. 
            Depew and daughter-in-law, Billie Jo; one sister, Ruth Depew Dixon; 
            mother-in-law, Mrs. Ted (Ellen) Welsh; grandchildren, Trevor and 
            Justin Sproles, Mia, Zachary and Quinn Melton, Amanda, Kasi and 
            Chelsea Depew, and Brandon Roberts; one great-granddaughter, Astyn 
            Paige Depew; sister-in-law, Marie Herron and husband, Tom, all of 
            Kingsport; one nephew, Wayne Herron; two nieces, Emma Norris and 
            husband, Sam and Ethel Fowler and husband, Eddie; and special 
            friend, Kenneth R. Dolen.

            Gladys R. Dietrich, 84, Ellenton, Fla.

            ELLENTON, Fla. - Gladys R. Dietrich, 84, died Sunday (Dec. 2, 2001) 
            at Tandem Health Care of Sarasota. 
            She was born Feb. 16, 1917 in Mohnton, Pa., and attended school in 
            Reading, Pa. She came to Ellenton in 1995 from Kingsport, where she 
            had resided for 50 years. She was a bookkeeper for 20 years at Mason 
            and Dixon Lines, and was a member of Women of the Moose and Women of 
            the American Legion. 
            She was a member of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church, Kingsport. 
            Surviving are daughters, Karen Clark of Bradenton, and Cindy 
            Ferguson of Bristol, Va.; sisters, Marion Strohl and Jeanne 
            Hoffmaster, both of Reading, Pa.; four grandchildren and two 
            great-grandchildren. 
            Services will be private. 
            Memorial donations may be made to Bristol Family YMCA, 400 Edgemont 
            Ave., Bristol, Tenn. 37620.

            Marie Fink, 80, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - Lillie Marie DeVault Fink, 80, of the Rock Springs 
            community, died Monday (Dec. 3, 2001) at Hillside Manor after a 
            lengthy illness. 
            She lived her entire life in the Rock Springs community and was a 
            member of the Rock Springs United Methodist Church. 
            Mrs. Fink retired from Tennessee Eastman Company in 1984 after 41 
            years service. 
               
            She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessee C. and Lillie 
            Carroll DeVault; husband of over 50 years, John W. Fink; sister, 
            Zelda Breeding; and four brothers, Verlin DeVault, Paul DeVault, 
            Jessee C. DeVault Jr. and Elan DeVault. 
            Surviving are a brother, David Devault, Rio Linda, Calif.; and 
            several nieces and nephews. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral 
            Home, downtown. 
            Friends may also call anytime at the home of a niece, Helen 
            Williams, 1505 Monterey Avenue. 
            Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Rock Springs United 
            Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry DeVault and the Rev. Scott A. 
            Robertson-Gouge officiating. 
            The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services.

            Mildred Fletcher, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - Mildred Kiehl Fletcher died early Wednesday morning 
            (Dec. 5, 2001) at Asbury Center at Baysmont Health Center. 
            Born July 13, 1907 in Galion, Ohio, Milly moved to Marion, Ohio, as 
            a child. She lived in Marion until moving to Columbus, Ohio. In 
            Columbus, she studied at Grant Hospital, graduating with a degree in 
            Nursing in 1928. While in nurses training she met Charles Leonard 
            Fletcher, who would become her husband of 58 years. 
            Milly worked as an RN in Rochester, N.Y., New York City and came to 
            Kingsport with Charles in 1933. She worked with the late Dr. L.C. 
            Cox delivering babies here in Kingsport. Milly taught Red Cross 
            classes during World War II. She was a member of the Kingsport 
            Junior Service League, and was active in the Women's League of 
            Voters. Milly volunteered her services as an RN for many years at 
            the Long Island Well Baby Clinic in Kingsport. She was a member of 
            the auxiliary at Holston Valley Community Hospital and was an active 
            member and communicant of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. 
            Milly loved the gift of life, filling her days with volunteer work, 
            golf, bridge, reading, travel, family and friends. 
            Surviving are one son, Charles A. Fletcher and wife, Gerry, 
            Columbia, S.C.; one daughter, Sally Morrow and husband, Bob, 
            Kingsport; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. 
            Calling hours are from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday in the Kent room 
            of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. 
            Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with 
            the Rev. Suzanne N. Smitherman officiating. 
            Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

            KINGSPORT - Stella Yontz Graham, 35, died Tuesday evening (Dec. 4, 
            2001) after injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

            Funeral Home, downtown. 

            Ethel Hammonds, 87, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - Ethel L. Cox Hammonds, 87, went home to be with the Lord 
            Wednesday morning (Dec. 5, 2001) at Hillside Manor Nursing Home 
            following an extended illness. 
            A lifelong resident of Sullivan County, she was of the Church of 
            Christ faith. She was a loving mother, grandmother and 
            great-grandmother who will be missed by many. 
            She was preceded in death by her husband, Mort Hammonds; her 
            parents, Adam and Nellie Cox; a sister, Margie Jennings; and three 
            brothers, Elmer, George and Lon Cox. 
            Survivors include two sons, Johnny Hammonds and his wife Joyce, 
            Church Hill, Donald Hammonds and his wife Jean, Dayton, Ohio; four 
            granddaughters, Janet Hammonds, Kingsport, Donna Owens, Tipp City, 
            Ohio, Tonya Fulcher, Arkansas, and Kellie Pooler, Dayton, Ohio; two 
            grandsons, Ronnie Hammonds, Kingsport, and Terry Hammonds, Church 
            Hill; nine great-grandchildren; and special friends, J.L. and Annis 
            Parker along with their son Jerry, Kingsport; several nieces and 
            nephews. 
            Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Carter-Trent Funeral 
            Home, Church Hill. Friends may also call anytime at the residence of 
            the son, Johnny and Joyce Hammonds, 630 Tranbarger, Rd., Church 
            Hill. 
            Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home 
            chapel with Pastor Larry Morelock and the Rev. Calvin Tabor 
            officiating. 
            Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Church 
            Hill Memory Gardens.

            Walter E. Hickman, 54, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - Walter E. Hickman, 54, of 1184 Moreland, passed away 
            Wednesday (Dec. 5, 2001) after a lengthy illness. 
            He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County. He was a veteran of 
            the Vietnam Conflict, serving in the U.S. Army. 
            He was a former employee of Vulcan Materials. 
            He was preceded in death by his mother, Elva Conkin; and stepfather, 
            Buster Conkin. 
            Surviving are one son, Edward Mack Hickman, Kingsport; one 
            granddaughter, Whitney Hickman; half sister, Cherlee Simpson; half 
            brothers, Vincent Hite, Kingsport, and Haskell Hite, Michigan. 
            Arrangements are incomplete.

            Hickman. 

            George W. Marcum, Big Stone Gap, Va.

            BIG STONE GAP, Va. - George W. (Bill) Marcum was born May 1, 1934 in 
            Williamson, W.Va., to Mella Hager and Carl Marcum. 
            He passed away on Dec. 4, 2001 at Lonesome Pine Hospital after a 
            brief illness. He was 67 years, 7 months and three days old at the 
            time of his passing. 
            He was married to Mary Lou Adams on Oct. 21, 1956 at Elryia, Ohio. 
            He was preceded in death by a son, Steven C.; a brother, Frank E. 
            Wright; a sister, Mella Francis Bittner; two sisters in infancy; and 
            his dad, Carl Marcum. 
               
            Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou of 45 years; two daughters and 
            sons-in-law, Cindy and Larry Phillips of Hamilton, Ohio, and Alice 
            and John Thomas of Eubank, Ky.; six grandchildren; one 
            great-granddaughter; his mother, Mella Hager Fleming of Elyria, 
            Ohio; one sister, Geri (Roy) Smith of Elyria, Ohio; and a host of 
            relatives and friends who loved him. 
            He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, receiving an 
            honorable discharge. He was a member of Berean Baptist Church at 
            Middletown, Ohio. He retired from Mercy Hospital in Hamilton, Ohio, 
            after 25 years of service as a painter. He and his wife then settled 
            in Big Stone Gap. They were blessed to settle in a neighborhood 
            where they were surrounded by good, caring friends. 
            His children want everyone to know what a wonderful dad he was. He 
            was also a most loving son to his mother, and to his wife, he was 
            her world. 
            Calling hours are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Holding Funeral 
            Home in Big Stone Gap, Va. 
            Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home 
            chapel with Brother Merle Caudill, Brother Charles Shepherd, Brother 
            Ellis Adams, Pastor Gary Arnett, Brother John Reedy and Brother 
            Jimmie W. Hall officiating. 
            Burial will be in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

            GATE CITY, Va. - Graveside services for Mary Evelyn McConnell, 72, 
            of Route 2, who departed this life early Monday morning (Dec. 3, 
            2001), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in the McConnell Cemetery 
            (Midway community), Route 2, Gate City. 
            Pallbearers will be Jay McConnell, Gene McConnell, Kelly McConnell, 
            Junior Howington, James Ramey and Matt Ramsey. 
            Family and friends will meet at the cemetery for the burial.

            ROGERSVILLE - Services for Pearlene Rivers Noaks, 76, who passed

            Gerald Kent Osborne, 65, Pound, Va.

            POUND, Va. - Gerald Kent Osborne, 65, died Wednesday (Dec. 5, 2001) 
            at Holston Valley Medical Center. 
            Mr. Osborne was of the Baptist faith. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Kent Osborne and 
            Ruth Cox Osborne. 
            Surviving are his daughter, Greta Kay Stout, Raynell, W.Va.; sister, 
            Lila Roberson, Abingdon, Va.; brothers, Donald Lee Osborne, Wise, 
            Va., Larry Osborne and Charles Osborne, both of Pound; two 
            grandchildren; and special friend, Alice Cox. 
            Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home, 
            Pound. 
            Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in the Sadie Baker 
            Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Edmond Bolen 
            officiating. 
            Interment will be in the Osborne Family Cemetery in Pound.

            Craig Scott Owens, 88, Wytheville, Va.

            WYTHEVILLE, Va. - Craig Scott Owens, 88, went home to be with the 
            Lord at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 4, 2001) at Mountain View Retirement 
            Home, Lebanon, Va. 
            Craig was born in Russell County, Va., on March 12, 1913 and lived 
            and farmed in Russell County until about 1960. He then moved to 
            Wytheville, Va., where he was a foreman for Pendleton Construction 
            Company, retiring in 1978. He helped build most of the bridges on 
            Interstate 81 from Abingdon to the Shenandoah Valley. He moved back 
            to Russell County in October of 2001. 
            He was a born again Christian who loved the Lord and was of the 
            Baptist faith. 
            He was preceded in death by his father, Denton King Owens (1946); 
            his mother, Delia Fogleman Owens (1957); one half-sister, Rachel 
            Owens Tate (1976); two half-brothers, Paul Adams (1963) and James 
            Owens (1985); and one granddaughter, Cassandra Blevins (1984). 
            Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Tina Herndon Owens; four 
            daughters, Shirley Owens Fletcher and husband Burke, Mount Carmel, 
            Juanita Owens Jessee and husband Paul, Lebanon, Va., Barbara Owens 
            Gibson and husband Giles, Lebanon, Va., and Sandra Owens Blevins and 
            husband Ronald, Wytheville, Va.; one son, Samuel Craig Owens and

            KINGSPORT - Callie Gay Rose, 84, formerly of the Caney Ridge 
            community of Dickenson County, passed away at Holston Valley Medical 
            Center on Wednesday (Dec. 5, 2001). 
            Mrs. Rose had made her home at The Oaks in Kingsport for the last 
            six months. She was a charter member of the Sweet Home United 
            Baptist Church on Caney Ridge. She was the daughter of the late 
            Willie and Sindusta Ball Ratliff and was preceded in death also by 
            her husband, William Swin Rose; brothers, Stuart and Ernest; and 
            sister, Polly Blevins. 
               
            Surviving are two sons, Vergil Lee Rose, Duffield, Va., and Ray H. 
            Rose and wife, Shirley, Kingsport; three sisters, Ruth Mullins and 
            Ellen Hill and husband, Ray, both of Coeburn, Va., and Goldie

            Johnny C. Wright Jr., 38, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - John (Johnny) Cecil Wright Jr., 38, passed away Monday 
            (Dec. 3, 2001) at his home after a brief illness. 
            Johnny was born Oct. 9, 1963 in Kingsport, a son of John Cecil and 
            Betty Sue Lunsford Wright Sr., Kingsport. He was employed by the 
            Engineering Sales of Blountville for 18 years. He attended Ketron 
            High School and graduated from North High School and Northeast 
            State. 
            He was a member of the Forrest View Baptist Church. 
            In addition to his parents, Johnny is survived by his wife, Karen 
            Jackson Wright, Kingsport; two stepchildren, Theresa Davis and 
            Gillian Bennett, both of Big Stone Gap, Va.; his maternal 
            grandmother, Cora Lunsford, Kingsport; brother, Chris Wright, 
            Kingsport; father and mother-in-law, Lawrence and June Jackson, Big 
            Stone Gap, Va.; stepgrandchildren, Hunter Owens, Sean Owens, Devin 
            Davis and Sierra Stratton.
