John N. Adsit, 78, Orange Park, Fla.

ORANGE PARK, Fla. - John N. Adsit, 78, of Orange Park, Fla., died at home on Wednesday morning (Oct. 10, 2001). He was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on Jan. 29, 1923. Mr. Adsit graduated from Penn State University with a B.S. degree in chemical engineering in 1948 after serving in Europe in WWII. He had a long career in chemical sales and retired from Union Camp Corp. in 1990. An active environmentalist, Mr. Adsit was a founding member of the Stewards of the St. Johns River and chairman from 1991-1994. As a member of the Orange Park Presbyterian Church, John Adsit served on the Session as an Elder and as a beloved Sunday School teacher. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rowena Hoge Adsit; his brother, Ray M. Adsit; and his children, Edith May Roberts, Harry Brooks Adsit II, John Frederick Adsit and Rowena Katherine Spector and nine grandchildren. James W. Baker, 61, Dungannon, Va.

DUNGANNON, Va. - James W. Baker, 61, entered into rest Sunday (Oct. 21, 2001) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Gate City Funeral Home.

Edna Lee Bellamy, 86, Church Hill.

CHURCH HILL - Edna Lee Davidson Bellamy, 86, of 339 Burlington Drive, passed away Sunday (Oct. 21, 2001) at Indian Path Medical Center. Mrs. Bellamy was born in Dickenson County, Va., but had resided in Kingsport. She was a housewife and member of Cameron United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Bellamy (1986); and her parents, Roy L. and Margaret Ethel Bellamy Davidson. Surviving are her daughters, Margaret Killen, Rossville, Ga., and Betty Eachen, Church Hill; son, William Lee Bellamy, Kingsport; five grandchildren, Tony Killen, Steve Killen, Pam Killen, Sue O'Shields, all of Georgia, and LeeAnn Eachen Broome, Church Hill; eight great-grandchildren; brother, James Robert "Bob" Davidson, Gate City, Va.; several nieces and nephews. Gordon George, 74, Suffolk, Va.

SUFFOLK, Va. - Gordon Edward George, 74, died on Friday (Oct. 19, 2001) at Obici Hospital, Suffolk. He was born in Russell County, Va., the son of the late Joe and Anna George. Mr. George was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from the Virginia Department of Highways. He was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church in Suffolk. He was preceded in death by two brothers, D.W. George and Herbert George; one sister, Clara George. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Shirley George; one son, John Danny George, Richmond, Va.; one granddaughter, Haley George; two sisters, Hazel Baker, Gray, and Helen Shell, Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood, Va. Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. John Gilley, 58, Kingsport.

KINGSPORT - John Ronald (Ron) Gilley, 58, passed away at his home while he was surrounded by his loving family on Sunday (Oct. 21, 2001). He fought a courageous battle with cancer for four months. John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather to his family. He loved his home that he had made for him and his loving wife so much. He was a humble, loving man. He brought a special meaning to every life that he touched. John was a devoted Christian and he was a member of the Northeast Church of Christ. He had so many loving, caring, kind friends at his church, who did so much for him during his illness. He will be sadly missed by all of them. John worked at the Mead Corporation for 15 years. He also worked at ORNL Lab in Oak Ridge, Tenn., for 20 years before retiring. His co-workers loved and respected him as a friend. He was preceded in death by his father, John B. Gilley, July 4, 1944; his grandmother, Stella Stair, and his great-aunt, Nannie Blair, whom he will be laid to rest by at Oak Hill Cemetery. They were waiting to welcome him with their open arms in the heavenly home. John leaves his loving wife, angel and soulmate of 38 years, Carolyn Sue Gilley; son, John Bryan Gilley of Maryville; daughter and son-in-law, Jeanine and Eddie H. Simerly of Maryville; four wonderful grandchildren, Justin Gilley of Nashville, Rachel Gilley of Maryville, and Alex and Aaron Simerly of Maryville; parents, Jack and Inez Rhoten of Kingsport; sister, Jackie Rhoten See of Kingsport; brother, Billy Rhoten of Kingsport; special friend, Linda Larkey. Peggy Hensley, 68, Gray.

GRAY - Betty Peggy Hensley, 68, of 213 Lake View Street, passed away in the Johnson City Medical Center on Saturday (Oct. 20, 2001). She was a native of Washington County, and daughter of Sarah Milne of Gray and the late Chris Larimer. Mrs. Hensley was a member of the Gray United Methodist Church and past president of the Gray Community Chest. She was preceded in death by one daughter and one son. Survivors include her husband, Raymond Fred Hensley of the home; son, Kent Hensley of Gray; sister, Anna Dean of Jonesborough; two brothers, Harold Larimer and Bob Larimer, both of Gray; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Gray Funeral Home Chapel, Gray. Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Ralph Kidd will be in charge of the service and Sandra Good will be in charge of the music. Pallbearers will be classmates and nephews. Betty Kreidler, 34, Kingsport.

KINGSPORT - Betty Rachael Kreidler, 34, 749 Bancroft Chapel Road, went home to be with the Lord Friday afternoon (Oct. 119, 2001) after injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Kingsport. She was a housewife and a devoted wife and mother, who will be greatly missed. She had lived most of her life in Pennsylvania, having moved to the Kingsport area six years ago. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her sister, Kathy Ann Hummel. Survivors include her husband, Jimmie Kreidler; sons, Kevin James Kreidler, Jason Ray Kreidler and Jimmie Raymond Kreidler, all of Kingsport; daughter, Jackie Lynn Kreidler, Kingsport; mother and father, Rachael E. Hummel and Thomas L. Hummel; sister, Helen Rhodes, Plymouth Township, Pa.; brothers, Thomas Lowell Hummel, Tunchannock, Pa., and John Hugh Hummel, Montrose, Pa. Wanda Jo Lawson, 55, Eidson.

EIDSON - Wanda Jo Lawson, 55, passed away Sunday (Oct. 21, 2001) at her home following an extended illness. She was a member of Compromise Baptist Church, and was a mail carrier in Eidson for 22 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Osha Ramey; brother, Jimmy; and sister, Linda. Surviving are her husband, Gerald Wayne Lawson; daughter Sherry Lamb and son-in-law Danny Lamb; two grandsons, Thomas Kyle Lamb and Mathew Wayne Lamb, all of Eidson; brothers, Larry and Frank Ramey, both of Kingsport, and Mike Ramey, Gate City, Va. Patricia Lewis, 68, Gray.

GRAY - Patricia "Pat" Slemp Lewis, 68, 904 Katie's Way, died Sunday (Oct. 21, 2001) at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn. Mrs. Lewis was a native of Carter County and had lived the past 40 years in the Gray area. She was a daughter of the late David O. and Myrtle Campbell Slemp. Mrs. Lewis was a member of Boones Creek Christian Church. Pat was a homemaker who was very active in her church. Survivors include her husband, Carl M. Lewis; two sons, Michael Lewis and Steven "Spud" Lewis, both of Gray; one daughter, Jane Culp, Bristol, Tenn.; one brother, Jim Slemp, Missouri; one sister, Betty Holt, Johnson City; five grandchildren, Jennifer and Joseph Culp, Heather, Alison and Alex Lewis. Pauline McKinney, 78, Kingsport.

KINGSPORT - Pauline Bullion McKinney, 78, 219 Odessa Road, died at 1:20 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 20, 2001) in Kingsport. She was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County (Kingsport), a devoted wife for 61 years, and a wonderful mother who was loved by all. She was a fine Christian lady who loved the Lord. She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Jo Housewright, grandchild, Joseph Frederick Jones; two sisters, Aileen Adams and Ruth Smith; parents, Eldridge B. and Bertha Barnes Bullion. Survivors include her husband, J. Fred McKinney, of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Mac (Patricia Jean) Jones, Alexandria, Va., Mrs. Mack (Carol) Brown, Lilburn, Ga., and Ms. Judy Taylor, Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Louise Cox, Kingsport; one brother, Charles L. Curtis Miles, 79, Woodway, Va.

WOODWAY, Va. - Curtis Miles, 79, died Saturday (Oct. 20, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center Wilcox Hall. He was born in and had been a lifelong resident of Lee County, Va. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from the Town of Pennington Gap, Va. He attended the Blue Springs United Methodist Church at Stickleyville, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Miles; parents Boyd and Ida Sage Miles; and two brothers, Willington (Wink) Miles and Tyler Miles. Surviving are two sons, Ronnie Miles and David Miles, both of Woodway; four daughters, Edna Wood, Stickleyville, Va., Carol Smith, Kingsport, Audrey Ramey, Woodway, and Debbie Elliott, Dot, Va.; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Corabell Hall, Stickleyville, Va. WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Services for Carrie Pratt, 92, formerly of Rogersville, who died Thursday (Oct. 18, 2001) will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville, with the Rev. Juanita V. Rhinehart, 79, Lebanon, Va.

LEBANON, Va. - Juanita V. Rhinehart, 79, went home to be with the Lord Friday (Oct. 19, 2001) in the Russell County Medical Center. A native of McDowell County, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Sam and Isabelle Hopkins Spencer. She had lived in Lebanon for the past 30 years. She was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Lebanon, serving on various committees of the church. She was the widow of the Rev. Robert L. Rhinehart. She was also preceded in death by one son, Charles Hamilton; two sisters, Catherine Saunders and Delores Clemons; one brother, William Spencer. Surviving are one daughter-in-law, Bernice Hamilton of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five granddaughters, Carol Hamilton and Angela, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Michelle Rollins and Bernice Moore, both of Virginia Beach, Va., and Donna Irish of Mariton, N.J.; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irma J. Jones of Wilmington, Del., and Virgia M. Baize of Brooklyn, N.Y.; also, a host of nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Combs Funeral Service in Lebanon. James W. Shaffer, 76, Bristol, Va.

BRISTOL, Va. - James W. Shaffer, 76, 776 Wagner Road, died Saturday (Oct. 20, 2001) in Wellmont Hospice House. He was a native of Scott County, Va., and was the son of the late Clint and Ocie Clark Shaffer. He was a former employee of Black Diamond and retired from Bristol Compressors. He was preceded in death by brothers, Cecil Shaffer, Harold Shaffer and Eugene Shaffer. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Georgia Esther Olinger Shaffer; daughters, Brenda Sue Noe and Freida Diane (Pokey) Shaffer, both of Bristol; sons and daughters-in-law, James Ray and Mary Shaffer, Jimmy Wayne and Margie Shaffer, Garry (Bo) and Patricia Shaffer, all of Bristol; sisters, Ilene Quillen, Shirley Wade and Betty Newland, all of Kingsport, Carolyn Welch, Gate City, Tenn., and June Shaffer, Dayton, Ohio; brothers, Willard Shaffer, Garnet Shaffer and Kenneth Shaffer, all of Kingsport, T.J. Shaffer and Fred Shaffer, both of Hiltons, Va., and Donald Shaffer, New Jersey; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services for Roger Steele Sr., of Kingsport, who was called home by his loving Lord on Friday (Oct. 19, 2001), will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the chapel of Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill by Pastor Joey Gafford. Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at East Lawn Memorial Park with military graveside rites provided by the American Legion Hammond Post No. 3. Eddie Paul Surrett, 56, Appalachia, Va.

APPALACHIA, Va. - Eddie Paul Surrett, 56, of 603 Blondell Ave., died early Sunday morning (Oct. 21, 2001) in Lonesome Pine Hospital, Big Stone Gap, Va., after a lengthy illness. He was a retired veteran of the U.S. Army, and attended the First Apostolic Church on Callahan Ave., Appalachia. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Alice and Bill Surrett; one daughter, Rachelle Surrett; wife, Vickie Surrett; two brothers, Gene Surrett and Kenneth Surrett. Surviving are two daughters, Traci Norris, Etowah, N.C., and Kim Kersey, Urbana, Ill.; four brothers, Ray Surrett, of the home, Gerald Surrett, Aberdeen, Md., James Surrett, Marnardville, Tenn., and Bobby Surrett, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date at the Apostolic Church in Appalachia. Roy A. Green Funeral Home, Appalachia, is in charge of arrangements.

Alpha Vermillion, 96, Gate City, Va.

GATE CITY, Va. - Alpha Blanche Vermillion, 96, of Route 2, departed this life Friday evening (Oct. 19, 2001) at her residence. Survivors and arrangements will be announced later by Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va.
