He flew 51 combat missions making bomb runs over Germany, Hungary, Yugoslavia, France, Italy, Czechoslovakia and Romania including seven bombing missions over Ploesti, Romania, one of the hottest targets in Europe. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross two times, the Air Medal seven times and six Medals Battle Stars, as well as a Presidential Unit Citation. He was wounded in battle, on a bombing mission to Munich, Germany, but declined to accept a purple heart because he felt his wounds were not serious enough to warrant that revered decoration. He received a total of 16 medal decorations for his war service. He was shot down once over Yugoslavia but was rescued by the Partisans and had breakfast with the Partisans one morning at which Marshall Tito was present. He was discharged in 1945 as a Captain. He influenced many young scouts and an exceptionally large number of his Boy Scouts earned the Eagle Scout Badge and went on to become outstanding citizens of Knoxville and the state of Tennessee. Many are now doctors, lawyers, teachers and professional men. As a result of his leadership and dedication, he was awarded the "Silver Beaver," the highest honor bestowed on a scouter at the District level. He was very proud of his scouts and was quick to encourage them in all their endeavors. He maintained a very friendly relationship with many of them through the years. Mr. Rowland was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church for over 50 years and taught Sunday School to the seventh and eighth graders for over 10 years. He served on the Board of Stewards for 15 years and served as Sunday School superintendent for two years.
