RAINBOW BRIDGE. A pet's letter to a friend.

In Memory Of Our Pals Recalled

"We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth."
-- Henry Beston, circa 1925

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors.
Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge, there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water, and warm spring weather. Those old and frail animals are young again. Those who have been maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other.
But, there is one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up. The nose twitches, the ears are up, the eyes are staring, and this one suddenly runs from the group.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. Your face is kissed again and again and again; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.

Heaven's Doggy-Door
My best friend closed his eyes last night,
As his head was in my hand.
The Doctors said he was in pain,
And it was hard for him to stand.

The thoughts that scurried through my head,
As I cradled him in my arms.
Were of his younger, puppy years,
  And Oh!...his many charms.

Today, there was no gentle nudge
With an intense "I love you gaze",
Only a heart that's filled with tears
  Remembering our joy-filled days.

But an Angel just appeared to me,
And he said, "You should cry no more,
God also loves our canine friends,
  He's installed a 'doggy-door"!

Gary - Betty's Pal.

gary.jpg

Gary , rescued, retired, racing Greyhound, companion, friend, loving pet of
Betty Hinds, went to Rainbow Bridge on Tuesday, September 16, 2003.
Gary worked as a racer until he was four years old, and then was in a rescue
kennel for about a year before he was adopted as a Christmas present for
me. We joined the Space Coast Therapy Dog program and we both
thoroughly enjoyed visiting the local Nursing Home until we both
developed mobility problems. Gary was loved where ever we went, for his
gentle, loving nature. We spent almost nine years together, helping each
other spend many happy times together on our early morning walks. I will
miss him terribly but he will forever live in my heart.
