Regimental History OHIO SIXTY-SIXTH INFANTRY Sixty-sixth Infantry. - Col., Charles Candy, Lieut.-Cols., James H. Dye, Eugene Powell, John T. Mitchell; Majs., Charles E. Fulton, Joshua G. Palmer, Samuel H. Hedges. This regiment was organized at Camp McArthur, Urbana, in Dec., 1861, to serve for three years. It was mustered into the U. S. service numbering 850 men and from the day of muster until the day of departure for the field it received additions to the number of 130. In Jan., 1862, it proceeded to join the forces of Gen. Lander on the Baltimore & Ohio railroad, in West Virginia. Its first service was in the Shenandoah Valley campaign against Stonewall Jackson and at the battle of Port Republic it acted a conspicuous part in defending a battery of 7 guns on the left of the line. The enemy had possession of these guns three times and as many times were driven from them by the regiment, with a loss of 109 men of the 400 engaged. At Cedar mountain its loss was 87 killed and wounded of 200 in arms and after the defeat at that place the regiment pursued its way with the corps to Antietam, being actively engaged in that battle. It also helped to repel the attack of Gen. J. E. B. Stuart upon Dumfries, where after a short and determined fight the enemy was driven off.
Antietam after battle report: Report of Lieut. Col. Eugene Powell, Sixty-sixth Ohio Infantry, of the battle of Antietam. HDQRS. SIXTY-SIXTH REGIMENT OHIO VOLUNTEERS, Camp near Harper's Ferry, Va., September 25, 1862. SIR: In compliance to orders received from headquarters of First Brigade, Second Division, Second Corps, Army of Virginia, I have the honor to make the following report of the part taken by the Sixty-sixth Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the late action near Sharpsburg, Md., on the 17th instant: The regiment moved to the field of battle in column, in company with the Fifth and Seventh Ohio Volunteers (infantry), and Twenty-eighth Pennsylvania Volunteers, composing the First Brigade, under command of Lieut. Col. Hector Tyndale, of the Twenty-eighth Pennsylvania. Moving in front of a piece of woods in which the enemy were in force, and under whose fire we were placed, having 2 wounded while we were in column, I immediately deployed my regiment, and two high fences were a serious obstacle to my deploying to the left. I formed in line of battle, moving to the right. I observed that the Seventh Ohio had formed line in a similar manner, and I immediately attached my regiment on the left of the Seventh Ohio, and together we moved toward the right of the line that the Twenty-eighth Pennsylvania were forming, which brought us immediately in front of a line of the enemy drawn up along a fence, in the edge of a cornfield. We immediately opened fire upon the enemy, who soon broke. We advanced, firing, in connection with the other regiments composing the First Brigade. The retreat of this line of the enemy soon became a rout. My regiment took a number of prisoners, who were sent to the rear. The regiment moved rapidly forward and formed, with the rest f the brigade, under shelter of a small knoll, directly in front of the church on the Sharpsburg road. This regiment assisted in repulsing the several attacks made by the enemy to drive us from this position, and in their last attack I was wounded by a musket-shot along the cheek and neck, which disabled me from remaining on the field the rest of the day. From the report of the acting adjutant of the regiment, we went into action 120 strong, and this small force acted as efficiently as it was possible for it to do. I had but two commissioned officers with me in the action, Lieuts. Smith and Yagel, both of whom escaped unhurt. I have the honor to be, sir, very respectfully, your obedient servant, EUGENE POWELL, Lieut.-Col. Sixty-sixth Ohio Vols., Comdg. Regiment. Maj. O. J. CRANE, Comdg. First Brig., Second Div., Second Corps, Army of Va. Source: Official Records: Series I. Vol. 19. Part I, Reports. Serial No. 27

Charles married Katherine E. EISENHART daughter of Hiram S. EISENHART and Matilda BEIDLER. Katherine was born 1 in Nov 1859. She died 2 on 2 Feb 1927. She was buried 3 in Hillside Cemetery; near Willow Grove.

Gail Eisenhart Belytschko August 2004:
My information about Charles is virtually all from my granddad's notes--Kate Eisenhart Zeiner delivered my Grandpa when his parents were living at her boarding house in Philadelphia. She and Charles were his baptismal sponsors.
Charles Zeiner

Born 1863. His father owned a large farm just east of Center Valley.

He owned a stable and livery business in Philadelphia, while Kate ran a boarding house.

After his retirement, he became the cemetery superintendent at the Hillside Cemetery near Willow Grove where he was buried after his death on Feb 10, 1915.

He and Kate were childless, but they played a major role in the lives of their nieces and nephews.

I did have a photograph of his tombstone; however, we recently discovered that no one laid a stone on Kate's grave after her death in 1927. We are in the process of having a bronze plaque made, so I gave the photo to the person who is handling the arrangements to help him locate her grave.

Just for your records, no one knew the exact date of Kate's birth and my Grandpa guessed that it was
******
Gail Eisenhart Belytschko August 2004:
Hiram and Matilda/Tillie nee Beidler Eisenhart had the following children who lived to adulthood:
Catharina/Kate who married Charles S. Zeiner (son of Catharine Schloyer)
Sylvanus/Wayne (my ggrandfather)
Amber Charles (my grandfather)-lived with Charles & Kate Zeiner from the time of his mother's death in 1900 until abt 1908)
Harry Joseph
Florence
Rollin Wayne married Stella Sloyer
Robert Hiram
Lloyd ("adopted son" of Charles and Kate Zeiner (1910 Census)--presumably taken in by them after his mother's death in 1902)
13 more children with 2 wives--Lloyd was the oldest
Valeria
Irma Z. (for Zeiner) Boyer---born out-of-wedlock and also raised by Kate and Charles Zeiner until her mother Valeria married abt 1905)
Luther-ran out of funds while at Kutztown State Normal School, but the frugal Hiram would not come up with any more money for "foolishness" like college.Luther swallowed his disappointment and went to Philadelphia where he also boarded with Kate and Charles Zeiner where he initially helped Charles with his livery business.
Wallace Cleveland married Jennie Mae Sloyer

So the Sloyers and the Hiram Eisenhart family were totally interconnected, and Charles and Kate kept the wheels from coming off her family on numerous occasions. Hiram himself was rigid, incredibly frugal, and seems to have had a very poor relationship with his children. In spite of all that Kate had done to keep the family together, Hiram cut her out of his will because she and Charles had not repaid a loan from early in their marriage. My Granddad Amber wrote that his "Aunt Kate" was the kindest woman he had ever known. That's why I was so saddened to discover that she lies in an unmarked grave. Hopefully we will rectify that within the next 6 months.

Gail Eisenhart Belytschko June 2005
In addition, we learned that the grave of Wallace's sister Kate Eisenhart Zeiner had never been marked. Her husband Charles Zeiner's mother was a Sloyer if I recall correctly? We had a bronze plaque made for Kate and had a small "plaque laying" ceremony. While I was at the Hillside Cemetery (Roslyn PA) for this I photographed Charles Zeiner's grave marker. I have not downloaded my photos as yet, but I will email it once I get that done. In the meantime, I'm attaching the "official" photo of Kate's plaque

They had the following children:

146 M iii William E. SLOYER was born 1 in Sep 1888 in Pennsylvania. He died unknown. William was employed 2 as builder in 1910 in Steel mill. He was employed 3 as machinist in 1920 in ? shop.

Linda KL:OSEK reports William as the biological son of Charles and Mary (MOLL) SLOYER. We have place him as the biological son of Charles and his second wife, Eliza. The reasoning for this is: the obituary of Mary's mother, dated March 1888, does not list Mary as a survivor; since William was not born until Sept. 1888, we conclude Eliza was his mother.
