MAN DIES, FRIEND HURT IN GUN CLUB ACCIDENT

An Bethlehem Township man died yesterday afternoon and his friend was wounded in what appears to have been a freak accident involving a handgun at a pistol rangein Upper Saucon Township.

Killed was Thomas C. Cope, 36, of 3861 Country Club Road. Wounded was Alna Edward Davis, 55, of 3947 Country Club Road, also of Bethlehem Township.

Davis was in critical condition in a shock-trauma unit after undergoing surgery at Lehigh Valley Hospital Center last night.

The shooting happened about 3:20 p.m. at the Friedensville Rod and Gun Club along Old Bethlehem Pike.

Initial information obtained by Upper Saucon police indicates the weapon may have fired repeatedly when it was being set on a gun stand by one of the men.

"At this point it appears to be accidental, but it's still under investigation," according to police. "No one witnessed exactly what happened and we've not been able to speak with Davis to find out what happened."

Police described the men as neighbors and "long-time friends."

They said Cope's 12-year-old daughter and Davis' wife Sharon were at the range with the two men. The females had just turned to walk away, when they heard rapid fire "like a machine gun." They turned and saw both men fall to the ground.

"It was a pretty bad scene," commented a police officer.

Pat Gruver, who lives in a mobile home next to the gun club and can see the firing range out her rear window, said she heard a "b-b- b-r-r-r-t-t -t" sound that reminded her of machine gun fire.

She said the sound was unusual, because normally she only hears one shot at a time.

When she looked out, she saw one man fall to the ground and another clutching his stomach. Then he also fell. At first she thought it was just kids fooling around, pretending to be hurt.

But then a woman ran to her home and asked her to call an ambulance because two men had been shot.

She said the men were not standing between the firing line and thetarget area. Besides the Davis-Cope party, Mrs. Gruver said only one other person was shooting at the range at the time of the incident.

Mrs. Gruver and her husband Randy were told the weapon went off when someone set it down. Gruver said he was told "the gun went wild."

Police indicated they heard the same story the Gruvers were told.

Police said the weapon that shot the men was a .32-caliber semi- automatic pistol. The gun was owned by Davis. "It shouldn't fire like a machine gun," said police. They have not yet determined who was holding it when it went off.

Both victims were taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital Center by MedEvac helicopter. A hospital spokesman could provide no additional information on Davis' condition other than saying he was in surgery.

Cope was pronounced dead at 4 p.m. at the hospital center, according to a spokeswoman for Lehigh County Coroner Robert Weir.

An autopsy will be performed, possibly this afternoon, to determine the cause of death.

Michael Mish, president of the gun club, who knew Cope and had recently instructed his daughter in a hunter safety course, said last night, "They were not the type of guys to get involved in horse play. They were very conscientious."

The club, he added, had "never, ever had a shooting accident since it was chartered in 1945. In fact, we never had to file an insurance claim."

Cope was the husband of Mary Ellen (Stoeckel) Cope.

He was a heater helper in the coke works of Bethlehem Steel Corp. for the past 16 years.

Born in Fountain Hill, he was a son of Charles H. and May E. (Miller) Cope of Bethlehem R.4.

He was a member of St. Andrew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Easton.

He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War.

Surviving with his widow and parents are two daughters, Kimberly A. and Holly L., both at home; two brothers, Larry L. of Bethlehem R.4 and David W. of Bingen, and a sister, Mrs. Diane L. Bucko of Bethlehem R.4.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Templeton- Heintzelman Funeral Home, 326 Main St., Hellertown. Calling hours will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Thomas C. Cope, 36, who was wounded Saturday afternoon in an apparently freak accident at an Upper Saucon Township pistol range, died of gunshot wounds of the chest, according to Lehigh County Coroner Robert C. Weir.

An autopsy was performed yesterday at the Lehigh Valley Hospital Center.

Cope of 3861 Country Club Road, Bethlehem Township, was pronounced dead at 4 p.m. Saturday in the hospital center.

Alna Edward Davis, 55, of 3947 Country Club Road, Bethlehem Township, a friend and neighbor of Cope, remains in critical condition at the hospital center after surgery for gunshot wounds.

The accident happened at the Friedensville Rod and Gun Club along Old Bethlehem Pike.

Upper Saucon Township police said their investigation indicates the weapon - a .32-caliber semi-automatic pistol - may have fired repeatedly when it was being set on a gun stand by one of the men. The gun was owned by Davis.

Cope's 12-year-old daughter and Davis' wife, Sharon, were at the range, but neither witnessed the shooting.

The weapon will be checked at the state police crime laboratory in Bethlehem in an effort to determine what caused it to malfunction.

DEATH AT GUN CLUB IN UPPER SAUCON IS RULED AN ACCIDENT
[FIFTH Edition]

After a one-month investigation, Upper Saucon Township police have concluded that the Oct. 12 death of a man at the Friedensville Rod and Gun Club pistol range was caused by a handgun malfunction.

Thomas C. Cope, 36, of 3861 Country Club Road, Bethlehem Township, was killed. A friend, Alna Edward Davis of 3947 Country Club Road, was critically wounded.

Police earlier said they thought the gun, a .32-caliber, German- made semiautomatic, went off repeatedly when it was set on a gun stand by one of the men.

The police statement said ballistics evaluation by the Pennsylvania State Police crime lab "substantiates no basis for criminal charges" and "the shooting was found to have been accidental."

William J. Edmond, police chief, said Davis is recuperating at home after his release from the Lehigh Valley Hospital Center. He said Davis told police he does not remember what happened.

Davis would not comment on the accident to The Morning Call.

Trooper Leon Krebs, firearms and tool marks examiner with the state police crime lab at Bethlehem, said his investigation was to test the gun "to see if it will do what it is alleged to have done, and to show if there was any criminal act committed.

"I determined that the gun would malfunction and would fire full automatically," he said.

Krebs said the gun, which belonged to Davis, had not been taken apart to determine why it malfunctioned. "That would be up to the injured party to pursue civilly," he said.

"If we take the gun apart," he said, "maybe there is a situation inside there that we can never set up again."

Recent warnings by the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms concern the dangers of poorly made and easily installed conversion units. The bureau said conversion kits cannot be sold without state and federal approval.
Since the gun was not taken apart, Krebs said, he did not know if a conversion unit had been installed to change its operation in any way.

The unit could be a small part inside the firearm, he said, or it could be modification through wear.
