NOTE: from Debbie POE; My aunt told me she was a well educated woman for her time. My aunt said Lydia went to college at Bluemont College for Women which later became Kansas State University.Or this could be a wedding picture but I don't think she would have been by herself in the picture. In this picture I am guessing Lydia may be somewhere around 19-25 which mean the picture was taken in the late 1860's or early
1870's.Henry Sloyer writes in 1954: The next was Lydia, I saw her twice, and on one occassion,Cousin Lizzie (Elizabeth) was with her. I also fainty recall Harry being with her on her first visit back home. I remember we were playing together on a small hand wagon we used to haul hav.
Minnie Pearl Ache Howard Baker states about Lydia: Aunt Lydia was a perfect house keeper, cook and seamstress. She married Henry Moore.

"Between 12 and 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon the body of Freeman Hahn, a blacksmith, of East Catasauqua, was found hanging lifeless from a beam in his shop. Robert Kurtz first discovered the body. The feet were scraping the ground. Constable Dotterer, of West Catasauqua, cut the body down. Of late Hahn has been drinking heavily, and this led to domestic trouble. Hahn was born at Hellertown and was 45 years of age. He moved to East Catasauqua from Coplay and leased the blacksmith shop from Monroe Kurtz. The body was removed to his late home, No. 475 Race Street. Coroner Yost, held an inquest yesterday afternoon. The jury consisted of August Steitz, Frank L. Steitz, D. M. Dotterer, Robert Kurtz, A. A. Hardner and Calvin J. Deily. Their verdict was suicide by hanging."

Linda Klosek reports in her book, 250 Years of The Sloyer-Schloyer-Schleyer-Scheier Family, that Titus was a well know farmer whose farm was close to the Durham church. Titus and Savanna were attending the market at South Bethlehem and were ready to start home when a violent hail storm struck. The team of horses was so badly frightened by the hail that they got out of Mr. Sloyer's control on East Third St. and ran away for several blocks. The team struck a pole and Mr. and Mrs. Sloyer were thrown from the wagon, head first, landing on the asphalt road. Mr. Sloyer's skull was fractured and he died at 4 o'clock in the afternoon at St. Luke's Hospital. Mrs. Sloyer was bruised and shaken up, but she was able to go to her home where she had been confined to bed but had good chances of complete recovery. The horses ran on several blocks before being caught and they escaped unhurt. This account is from Titus' obituary. Titus had been Vice Pres, of the Sloyer Family Reunion in 1915.

Date: THURSDAY, May 1, 1986 Page: N22 FORMER NORTHAMPTON TEACHER DESCRIBES 40-YEAR CAREER,CHANGES by SONIA CSENCSITS, The Morning Call Mrs. Nellie Henry Sloyer, former Northampton school teacher, spoke last week of her40 years in the classroom for members and guests of the Northampton Area HistoricalSociety. Mrs. Sloyer reminisced about the early years in the district and saidshe started teaching inthe Central Building at 15th and Main streets in 1923. She retired in 1963. She graduatedfrom Northampton High School and Kutztown Normal State Teachers College. She spoke of the beginnings of departmental work, a change from the days when teacherstaught all subjects. The ''new'' method went into effect when she began her teachingcareer. She taught English, spelling, language arts and writing. She said the day was broken up into 40-minute periods, recess and lunch. Students wenthome each day for lunch. There was no transportation provided so students walked homefor lunch. She said there were 40 in a class, students sat in double desks, were eager to clean theerasers used on blackboards, and that the ink pens were collected each day. Students weregiven one pencil a month. When she began teaching, she earned $100 a month and there were strict regulations forfemale teachers. She said in 1929 when things got bad, the school board deducted fundsfrom teachers' pay. She taught World History to junior high students. While there, she ran a knitting andcrocheting club. When students forgot their supplies, they were charged and the moneywas given to a charitable organization. She read the poem, ''I Shot an Arrow to The Air,'' and said teaching is like the poem.Teachers, she said, send out thoughts to people and, ''Maybe the thoughts will stay a longtime.'' A plaque of appreciation was given to former president Doris Daumer by Mike Faryna, society president. The Society is in the process of planning for the Community Days festival in July and foran open house at the Siegfried Railroad Station in September. William married 1, 2 Annie L. FLUCK daughter of Francis A. FLUCK and Matilda L. ? on 27 Jan 1887 in Hellertown, Pennsylvania; by Rev. W.L. Bieber. Annie was born 3, 4 on 27 Jul 1868 in Pennsylvania. She died 5 on 19 Oct 1961. She was buried 6 in Springtown Cemetery; Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.
Diane LAMBORN reports: she remembers going to visit her great-grandmother when she was about 5 yrs. old...her dad, a minister, went to pray with her, she was 92 and blind and had tons of white hair piled on top of her head in a bun...she was fully dressed sitting in a dark sitting room and very frail but fully aware of who we were. She was living with her daughter, Ella. This is Diane's one and only recollection of her. Even though Diane was very young and the visit very short, it made quite an impression on her.
