A former child care worker, who last fall resigned from Lehigh County Juvenile Detention Center before an administrative hearing concerning his activities with a female detainee could be held, was found dead in his Northampton house last night, police said.

Keith A. Gross, 34, of 132 E. 21st St., apparently died of a single, self-inflicted wound to the chest from a 9mm handgun, Northampton Police Chief Richard J. Fenstermaker said.

Gross was pronounced dead at the scene about 8:30 p.m., Northampton County Coroner Joseph Reichel said.

Early this year Gross also was fired from a job as part-time patrolman in North Catasauqua, which he had held about a year, in the wake of the juvenile detention incident.
"He was given the opportunity to get his name cleared, but to our knowledge, he never did so," North Catasauqua Police Chief Kim Moyer said.

Gross, then a child care worker at the detention center, was suspended without pay for allegedly having improper contact with and writing a "love letter" to an 18-year-old female detainee.

County officials would not identify Gross as the letter's writer. He resigned his position in early November, before an administrative hearing on charges of violating department regulations could be held.

When asked why officials would not release Gross' name after he resigned, County Administrator John Kachmar told a Morning Call columnist, "The former employee has some severe emotional problems and we don't want him to do bodily harm to himself or others."

Fenstermaker said it was believed the gun was Gross's personal weapon. An investigation by Northampton police and the Northampton County Coroner's Office is continuing, Fenstermaker and Coroner Joseph Reichel said.

Gross applied for part-time police work with the Northampton department more than a year ago, Fenstermaker said, but at the time the borough did not need any part-time officers.

Gross also was fired from a job as a South Whitehall Township patrolman in 1985 because he allegedly falsified information on his job application concerning whether he had ever been fired from or resigned after being told he would be fired from a job, officials said.

The township said Gross, a former Muhlenberg College security guard, allegedly gained access to confidential information about the pay scales and salaries of other college security guards. He agreed to resign his security job in lieu of being fired, according to testimony before the Civil Service Commission.

Gross lived in a small house to the rear of his mother's house at the same address. An autopsy will be performed today, Reichel said.

Members of the City Limits Assembly of God Church used balloons Wednesday to send messages to their friend and fellow congregation member, 15-year-old Stephen Gross.

Hundreds of balloons, each bearing messages such as "We love you, Stephen," drifted into the sky from near the church at Ridge Avenue and Chew Street in Allentown, reaching for heaven.

Stephen, baptized at the church a scant five weeks ago, was planning to give a talk to the congregation Sunday night. But the Dieruff High School freshman was killed by a car that afternoon at E. Hamilton and Albert streets while riding his bicycle.

About 195 congregation members -- including parents Stephen Sr. and Ann and 14-year-old brother Daniel -- marked Stephen's passing with an upbeat service at the church.

Stephen would have preferred that to a gloomy one, said the Rev. Jim Rivera, church pastor.

On a stage inside the chapel, Rivera and a woman sang with a small band of church members. Others danced in the aisles and in front of the stage. One woman dropped to the floor in tears.

At one point Gross approached the stage, his hands clasped together. A large group surrounded him as he mouthed: "I belong to Jesus, I belong to him, I belong to Jesus, free from sin," the song Rivera and the others were performing.

"These are people that have so much love and compassion in their hearts, they would do that for anybody, not just us," Gross said later. "They're doing that because they love Stephen."

Stephen became a member of City Limits Assembly of God Church on the Tuesday before he died. Rivera was going to announce the news at Sunday night's service. The boy's membership came after 12 weeks of classes in which he was invited to learn about the Bible and ask questions about God and life.

Assistant Pastor Luis Torrado described Stephen as someone who "led not by what he said but what he did." Torrado recalled that the boy was able to calm rowdy classmates just by showing good behavior himself.

Rivera told the congregation that Stephen's death made them "think of the future" and about taking responsibility for family and loved ones.

Gross was aware his son's death is a lesson to parents.

"I hope they really think before they let their kids go out. Before they leave in the morning, before they go to bed at night, they should tell their kids they love them," he said. "Family is everything."

The driver who hit Stephen, Alejandro Martinez, 22, of 1042 Spring Garden St., Allentown, has been charged with aggravated assault, speeding and driving with a suspended license and is in Lehigh County Prison under $25,000 bail.

Allentown City Council on Wednesday asked the administration to take steps to slow vehicles coming off the Hamilton Street bridge.

Noting that police had measured 76 feet of skid marks, Gross said he has driven the bend where the accident happened to see for himself if Martinez could have been following the speed limit.

"I've tried going 25, you can't skid at 25," he said softly. "The man should have never been there."
