Wendy Boettger states 11/2002:
"I am descended from Francis Sloyer, son of George and Catherine. My family line comes
down from Francis (born in 1830) and his wife, Mary Ann Hatter. Francis' daughter Anna
Maria (who was called Mariah (with the long "i" sound) was married to Abraham Dugan. She
had 8 children, 7 of whom lived. I have all the names and dates for those children and
then some. I also have a little more info on some of Mariah's siblings.
Abraham & Mariah's children eventually ended up in Easton, PA and Phillipsburg, New Jersey as I'm
sure you are aware. I was born in Easton. I come from their 5th child, Stella Dugan.
She was my great grandmother. The last name actually did not have an "s" on the end, but
some of the kids left it there, some didn't. Plus Abraham's tombstone shows an "s".
Technically, there wasn't one."

Wendy BOETTGER research*Once again, note how the census taker butchered names. It should have been Edward Hartzell, Stella, his wife, and Alma, his daughter. And again, there was an “s” on the end of Dugan.
**It shows that Alma was born in NJ. That is because Minerva Avenue is in downtown Easton, right near the border of PA and NJ. Alma was born in Phillipsburg, a few miles from her home in Easton. This was characteristic of many children in that day and still is frequent today. The same occurred with my mother and my grandson, even though they never lived in New Jersey.

Mrs. Samuel Bowers

Anna Mariah Sloyer Dugan, Bowers obituary reads as follows: "Anna Maria Bowers, 66 years old, wife of Samuel Bowers, died at 4:30 o'clock this morning at the home of her son-in-law, Edward E. Hartzell, 826 Milton avenue, of a complication of ailments. Mrs. Bowers was twice married, her first husband being the late Abraham Dugans, of Phillipsburg. She is survived by seven children: Mrs. Simeon Hockman, Horace Dugans, Mrs. John Mushlitz and Mrs. Edward E. Hartzell, of Easton, and George Dugans of Straw Church, and Washington Dugans and Elwood Dugans of Phillipsburg; also by a brother, Peter A. Sloyer, of Phillipsburg; a sister, Mrs. William Kutz, of Phillipsburg, and two step-sisters, Mrs. Eugene Scott of Freemansburg road, and Mrs.Charles Straus, of Riegelsville, Pa. She attended the Methodist Episcopal Church. (sorry about the bad copy. My copy isn't that great either. I took it from a microfilm at the library)My Notes: according to this obituary, she never was divorced from Mr. Bowers, but we don't know at this point. Mariah's "complication of ailments" included "Sarcoma of Uterus and Bladder", which is listed as her cause of death on her death certificate. Sarcoma is cancer. She also had cancer of the right leg and from what my mother told me, while she was in her last days, living with her daughter, Stella, my mother said that Stella went into her room one morning and found that one of her fingers had "fallen off". Quite a macabre thought........ She did die in her sleep. Stella found her in the morning. I'm also not sure which Methodist Episcopal Church she attended, but I think it was in Phillipsburg, as I know that Stella and Eddie Hartzell got married in a Methodist Episcopal church in Phillipsburg. (by the way, Edward Hartzell was always called "Eddie")

Wendy BOETTGER reports:

Marion said she very vaguely remembers Anna Mariah Sloyer Dugan. She remembers her as a small woman. Most of the Dugan's ended up very short, except for Uncle Wash. He was tall. I can certainly attest to that. My great grandmother was about 5'3. My grandmother was about 5'2. Esther Hockman Cook Painz Roseberry wasn't even 5 ft tall. That's why we always called her "shorty". It was a running joke between my brother, myself, and her. I remember going to her funeral and viewing and standing there at the casket saying "Goodbye Shorty" and Marion smiled and said that she would have really appreciated that....... Marion is really cool. Wish you could know her. I just hope I can get all the stories out of her before she's gone. Most of the good gossip she said she got from Aunt Mame. Aunt Mame always knew the "juicy" stuff..... My mother really laughed when she heard that. ******
