Mr. Kressler Died of Burns
Popular Young Eastonian Met With Accident at Bethlehem Steel Works.
William E. Kressler, one of Easton's best-known young residents, died in St. Luke's hospital, South Bethlehem. at 2 o'clock this morning from burns received January 9 at the Bethlehem Steel plant. His death ended a brave struggle.
Mr. Kressler, who had been attending Lafayette College as a member of the class of 1918, entered the employ of the steel company in October, 1917 and became a smelter and steel worker. Today a week ago he had drawn a heat and was closing a tap-hole in the furnace, when a movable plate on which he was standing gave away and caused him to fall into a trough filled with hot slag and metal. After a desperate effort he succeeded in getting out of the trough, but his clothing was a mass of flames. He tore of his shirt and a Greek who witnessed the accident ripped off other articles of clothing. His face and head escaped the flames.
The young man was hurried to St. Luke's hospital, where he began a struggle to live that commanded the admiration of surgeons and nurses. He was conscious to the very last, and fought with a strong will to aid the efforts of those who were trying to save him. He did this despite the fact that the pain was almost unbearable. Finally, his heart weakened under the strain, and the unequal struggle ended.
Mr. Kressler was graduated from Lerch's Preparatory school in 1914 and with his brother, Kenneth F. Kressler, who is a member of the French army, entered Lafayette. When the latter enlisted, William also left college and went to work at the steel plant. Kenneth was transferred from the American army to the Automobile Corps of the French army, as a member of S.S. Unite NO 6453. He is now at Strausburg, Germany. It was the intention of both young men to re-enter Lafayette upon the return of Kenneth.
Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William J. Kressler, with whom he resided at No. 205 East Madison Street, South Side, he is survived by the following brothers and sisters - Miss Anna M. Kressler, Miss Ruth R. Kressler, Miss Elizabeth W. Kressler, Miss Charlotte S. Kressler, Miss Virgina G. Kressler, Keneth F. Kressler, Theodore F. Kressler and John H. Kressler. He was a member of the first Reformed Church and the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity of Lafayette College.
