Bethlehem Globe Times July 20, 1954 as quoted in 250 Years of The Sloyer-Schloyer-Schleyer-Scheier Family by Linda M. Klosek:
Otto's father, Joseph, also a pump man at the plant and for the last 14 years of his life, he and his son manned and maintained the pumps together. The father, for many years, ran the spring pit pumps, father and son worked together mostly on the night shift. The senior Leidich's service began under the old Bethlehem Iron Co. and extended over 59 years . When the father died, the son took over the spring pumps. Otto came to Bethlehem with his parents from Bucks County. They resided on Mechanic St. On July 12, 1901, when he was 15, he was given his first job at the steel plant by Bob Cortright, then a repairman foreman. His wage was 84 cents for an 11 hour day. Otto worked with the pumps and compressors in the Lehigh Division until 1918, when he transferred to the Saucon steam department and became a maintenance repairman. For more than thirty years his duties included care of steam pumps, which provided high pressure hydraulic power to the Saucon Mills for operating shears, pull-backs, turntables and other devices. About six months ago the old pumps were replaced with turbine-driven centrifugal pumps. Otto's experience in his half a century at the Bethlehem plants covers all types of water pumps, air compressors, condensers and steam engines. Vivid among his many recollections of half a century spent in the plant are several floods that have inundated shops, furnaces and other operations, and the fire that destroyed the old office building in 1906. He operatedthe high pressure pumps during that exciting catastrophe. ****** Obituary as quoted in 250 Years of The Sloyer-Schloyer-Schleyer-Scheier Family by Linda M. Klosek: Otto was a maintenance man in the steam and boiler house, Bethlehem Steel Co., Saucon Div. and a member custodian for the Dewey Fire Co. Hellertown, PA. He retired after 52 years as a pump and compressor operator and maintenance man at the Bethlehem plant. He and Annie were married on the 25th anniversary of Otto's parents. They resided at 48 W. Saucon St. Hellertown, PA. He died very suddenly at his home and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Hellertown, PA
