Death of New Jurist Shock to the County
Became Ill on Trip, Returned home and was taken to Hospital
Judge James T. Woodring, 421 Vine Street, Bethlehem, elected on Democratic ticket, last November as the third member of the bench of Northampton County, died in St. Luke’s Hospital, Sunday night at 11:05 from diabetes, aged 61 years, 8 months and 26 days. He was admitted to the hospital Sunday evening at 7 o’clock.
Judge Woodring was stricken on Friday while away on a trip. He immediately returned home and took to his bed. His condition rapidly became worse and his removal to the hospital was decided upon.
Mrs. Woodring was prostrated at her home last night following the death of her husband. Allen Woodring was expected home hourly near the end.
Judge Woodring was born in Hellertown on Aug 4, 1860, and was a son of the late John Woodring, who was also born in Hellertown, in 1912. He was the youngest of five children. After receiving elementary education in the Hellertown schools, Judge Wooding entered the preparatory department of Muhlenberg College, Allentown, from which he was graduated in 1881 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. He then began to study law in the office of E. J. Fox. Sr., deceased, at Easton, and was admitted to the Northampton county bar on June 19, 1885.
Returning to Hellertown, Mr. wooding established an office there, which he later moved to the borough of South Bethlehem. For many years he was solicitor of the borough of South Bethlehem, Hellertown and Freemansburg and Lower Saucon Township. In 1891 he was elected county solicitor. In 1894, Mr. Woodring was elected as district attorney, which office he filled for the full term, which was then three years.
In 1880 Mr. Woodring was married to Miss Annie, daughter of Madison Long. His wife survived him with three children: James T. Woodring, Jr., and Allan Woodring of Bethlehem and Mr. Theodore Cook, of Buffalo. Allen Woodring is now attending the University of Syracuse. He is a world removed athlete, having won the 200 metre Olympic race at Antwerp in 1920, defeating Charlie Braddock, famous American Athlete. Last fall when Judge Woodring was asked relative to the political situation he remarked that is he could ‘run’ as well as hi son he would probably be elected. On Saturday last Allen Woodring figured prominently in the relay races at Franklin Field, Philadelphia.
One brother, Alfred T. Woodring, of Hellertown, also survived, Judge Woodring was a member of Hellertown Lodge, No. 563, F. and A. M.; a past commander of Bethlehem Commander of Bethlehem Commandery, Knight s Templar; a past high priest of Zinzendorf Chapter, No. 216, R. A. M., of Bethlehem; Bethlehem Lodge, B.P.O. E., and the Jacksonian Democratic Association, Easton. He was a member of the First Reformed Church, Bethlehem.
The funeral will be held from his late home 421 Vine Street, Bethlehem on Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The services at the house will be private. Public services will be held in the First Reformed Church, Bethlehem and interment in the Hellertown Union cemetery.
Last November Judge Woodring was elected to the bench as a third judge, receiving a majority of approximately 5000 over his Republican opponent, T. McKeen Chidsey. He took the oath of office on January 1st, last, and presided over his first term of criminal court during the second week of February. His work on the bench was most favorable commented upon by attorneys and all appearing in his room and his charges to juries ere models of brevity and sound common sense. Judge Woodring had a human side which appealed to all with whom he came in contact and it is this quality which won him so many votes at the election last fall. His death is generally regretted on all sides.
Judge Woodring is the second member of the judiciary of the vicinity to pass way within a few months, Judge Milton Henniger, of Lehigh County, having died recently.
Judge Woodring’s successor will be appointed by Governor Sproul.
A complete list of the organization of which Judge Woodring was a member follows: Bethlehem Commandery, No: 90, Knights Templar; H. Stanley Goodwin Lodge, No. 648, F. and A. M. Bethlehem; Hellertown Lodge, No. 563, F. and A. M.; Ezra Chapter, No. 291, Royal Arch Mason, Bethlehem; Lulu Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Philadelphia, the Pomfret Club, Easton; Bethlehem Forest, No. 61, Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Jacksonian Democratic Association, Easton; Jacksonian Democratic Association Bethlehem; Washington Republican Club, Bethlehem; Bethlehem Lodge, B. P. O .E.
Successor will serve until 1924
The successor to the late Judge James T. Woodring, who died last evening, will be appointed by Governor Sproul and will serve until January 1, 1924.
The election laws of Pennsylvania provide for filling vacancies in the office of judge as follows.
Any Vacancy happening by death, resignation or otherwise, in any court of record, shall be filled by appointment by the Governor , to continue till the first Monday of January next succeeding the first (Municipal) election; which shall occur two months after the happening of such vacancy.
As the next municipal election does not take place until November 1923, a judge will not be chosen by the people until that time.

Amanda was apparently married twice: to Charles SCHAFFER (from Linda's Book) with 2 daughters, Annie & Jennie. In 1900 Anne & Jennie (possibly middle name of Florence) are living with William & Amelia (SLOYER) MARSTELLER. Apparently Charles SCHAFFER died bef 1910 when Amanda is living with her father and her two daughters. Amelia must marry again, and Mr. DIMMICH dies or the divorce before 1920. Amanda has resumed the SCHAFFER name and their are 3 girls in the census - Jennie Florence SCHAFFER and Edna & Helen listed as SCHAFFER, but really DIMMICH We learn in 1930. Anyway Edna Lottie DIMMICH was already in our database as the mother of Norma BAUDER - I don't know if there was a marriage there or not!

Note from Karen Hughes, a MOODY descendant and researcher submitted the following 8/2007-I talked to my dad (Arthur Neuber - per phone call of 19 August 2007)) and he said he did not go to school with Eugene but knew him. Arthur lived in Geary county so went to a different school. Eugene went to Vinton school, Riley Co., Kansas (the school is no longer there - the land is part of Fort Riley and there is a road named for the school there) and lived with his grandparents until it was time to go to high school. He probably went to Vinton Church because that is where his grandparents were members. (The church is no longer standing and the land is part of Fort Riley) He lived for a time at the home of Dan Spencer in Junction City. Dan ran a men's clothing store there. I am assuming he was going to high school there. He also attended college in Manhattan (that would have been KSAC at that time).

Published in gainesvilletimes.com from December 8 to December 13, 2009 David Allen Sloyer Obituary A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 15 in the chapel of Little and Davenport Funeral Home, for David Allen Sloyer, 69, who passed away Thursday, Dec. 3rd, 2009, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born to the late Alice Virginia Sloyer and George Mark Sloyer in Topeka, Kansas. His late sister was Virginia Cox of Topeka, Kansas, and brother was Irvin Clyde (Bus) Sloyer of Topeka, Kan. He is survived by his wife, Linda Harwell Sloyer of Gainesville; his sisters, Calvina Wilson of Topeka, Kan., and Rose Hill of Overland Park, Kan.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Keith Hersh of Topeka, Kan., and Carol and Jerry Benson of San Francisco, Calif.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Delores Sloyer of Cumming and Frank and Sondra Sloyer of Hutchinson, Kan.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dave married Linda, a "Gainesville girl", in 1979. After living in Atlanta for 15 years, they moved back to Gainesville in 1994. Dave graduated from Topeka High School and attended Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. After college, Dave went to work for Aerojet General in California. From there, he came to Marietta to work at Lockheed in 1965. His love for automobile racing was a driving force in his life. After pulling his race cars all over the country doing club races, he decided to build a race track at home, so in 1969, Road Atlanta was born. Dave was the designer and founder of Road Atlanta and remained at the track as vice president and general manager until 1979. In 1970, he received an award from the State of Georgia Athletic Hall of Fame as a Finalist for Sports Executive of the Year in recognition of his achievements as founder of Road Atlanta. He went into sales and services after Road Atlanta but continued to love all forms of motor sports. Dave loved spicy foods. After a successful liver transplant in 1995, he developed his own company, Sarchi Foods, and his own salsas and hot sauce products. In 2000, he built a manufacturing plant in Cleveland to further develop his own product line and to manufacture for many other small companies. He was a man who never gave up on anything! He was loyal to his friends, and he never forgot his blessings. He spent many years as a volunteer speaker for Lifelink spreading the word about the importance of organ donation and the miracle of his own life. He loved his God. He loved his family and his dog, Pepper. He will be missed by all those who knew him. The family will receive friends after the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to Shepherd's Staff, a ministry for children in the Gainesville/Hall county area at St. Luke's Church. The address is Shepherd's Staff, P.O. Box 27, Gainesville, GA 30503. Online condolences can be made at littledavenport.com. Little & Davenport Funeral Home, 355 Dawsonville Highway, Gainesville, is in charge of arrangements.
