She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Bethlehem, where she sang in the choir for more than 60 years and taught Sunday school.

Margaret Merkle, 81, of Bethlehem, died Friday in St. Luke's Hospital. She was the wife of the late Curtis S. Merkle.

A 1931 graduate of Kutztown State Teachers College, she taught in the Bethlehem Area School District for 21 years, retiring in 1972. Before that, she was a first grade teacher in Hanover Township Elementary School, 1931-41.

Born in Allentown, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Minnie (Fatzinger) Rhine. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Bethlehem.

Survivors: Daughters, Darlene, wife of George H. Treisner, and Doris, wife of Philip Giles, both of Bethlehem, and Carole, wife of Willard Harmon of New Cumberland, Cumberland County; brother, Clarence of Palmyra, Lebanon County; six grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.
