Deceased Name: Wayne Whelan Wayne Whelan, 83, Topeka, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at a Topeka hospital.
He was born Dec. 21, 1918, in Topeka, the son of Frank and Goldie Whelan. A lifelong Topekan, he graduated from Topeka High School and received a bachelor's degree in business administration from The University of Kansas. He served in the Navy during World War II and held the rank of lieutenant commander. He was secretary-treasurer of Whelan Lumber Co. before he became president of Whelan Lumber in 1952. He later was named chairman of the board of Whelan Lumber.
Mr. Whelan was a member of Topeka Country Club, Masonic Lodge No. 51 AF&AM, Scottish Rite, Jesters Unit of the Arab Shrine and First Congregational Church where he was past chairman and a trustee.
Mr. Whelan had been past president of the Topeka Chamber of Commerce. He served on the City Planning Commission and was past president and campaign chairman of the Topeka United Way. He was a member of the board of directors for Rotary, Red Cross, Topeka Country Club, the Stormont-Vail Trustees, Brewster Place Trustees and the Southwestern Lumberman's Association. He was past chairman of the Radio Free Europe Campaign and a member of the Lumber Dealers National Research Council.
He married Mary Alexander on Dec. 21, 1941 in Norfolk, Va. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Ward Whelan, Topeka; a daughter, Janice Good, Denver; and three grandsons.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at First Congregational Church. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mr. Whelan will lie in state after noon today at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, where visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m.

Joe was born July 15, 1924 to Tony and Mary Malovich in Alder, Washington. He spent most of his youth following his parents in their work in various mining and logging camps. During World War II Joe served as a Corpsman in the United States Navy. After leaving the service, he attended Clover Park Technical School, specializing in Aircraft Mechanics. Joe then worked as a civilian employee for McChord Air Force Base for 32 years as an Aircraft Hydraulic Mechanic. In his free time he enjoyed woodworking, kite flying, antiquing and traveling in his motor home. He is survived by his wife, J.J. Malovich; son, Mike Malovich and wife, Wendy; daughter, Shaunie Frederick; step sons, Jim and Jeff James; sisters, Mary Surina and Eva Malovich; and several nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his first wife, Janice; father and mother; brother, Stan Malovich and sister, Julie Cooper. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 12, 2002 at the Garden Chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home, with Pastor Dean Curry officiating.
