FATAL CRASH WAS ON COUPLES 39th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

PAUL E. and MARAN KLOTZ REMEMBERED FOR KINDNESS, HUMOR, CHRISTIAN MINISTRIES. THEY WERE DEVOTED TO GOD, EACH OTHER.
by ROSA SALTER, The Morning Call

When the Rev. Mark FULTZ went to conduct services at God's Missionary Church in Coopersburg yesterday, he was greeted by members with heavy hearts.

The members had recently learned that two former church attendees, Paul E. and Marian KLOTZ, had been killed Saturday afternoon in a car crash on the day of their 39th wedding anniversary.

"There's a lot of people in my church who knew them and were quite broken up about it," said FULTZ.

According to police, the impact of the collision sent the KLOTZ's car and the rig's cab 112 feet up an embankment. The car then hit a tree and landed on its side in a driveway at 4149 Chestnut Hill Road. The truck's cab landed on top of the car's passenger side door.

Mrs. KLOTZ, who was driving, and her husband, who was in the front passenger's seat, were pronounced dead at 5:55 p.m. by a member of the Lehigh County coroner's office. A spokesman said they died of multiple trauma.

At the church, the couple were known for being devoted to their faith and each other, FULTZ said.

For 20 years, KLOTZ was director of the 9-acre Elm Grove Holiness Camp Meeting on Camp Meeting Road, an evangelical Christian retreat.

Last year, the camp was in the news after Upper Saucon Township condemned the site just off Route 309 for unspecified land use.

At the time, KLOTZ said he received two letters from the township but neither mentioned pending condemnation. In a telephone call about the matter from township solicitor John ROBERTS, ROBERTS indicated only that he wanted to buy the land himself, KLOTZ said.

At the time, FULTZ circulated a petition against the condemnation among the retreat's supporters, who said the grove was used once or twice a summer and had a long heritage of being considered land consecrated to the work of God.

FULTZ said he has been minister of his church only about two years and did not know the couple well, as they had not attended lately.

The Rev. Paul PRICHETT, associate pastor at Ebenezer New Reformed Church, said even though the KLOTZed were not church members, they attended regularly.

He said the KLOTZes were faithful Christians, devoted to their family and the church.

Paul KLOTZ "is a person you'd like to have as a neighbor...(Marian) always had a joke or something like that to tell you," he said. They were an asset to the church and the community.

The KLOTZes were members of Bethel Baptist Church, Sellersville, and KLOTZ was a licensed minister serving for 15 years in many ministerial capacities through God's Missionary Church.

The couple were parents of a son, Stephen P. KLOTZ of Dayton, Ohio, who attended Bible college, and two daughters, Cynthia L. FEHR, wife of Paul H. FEHR Jr., and Betty Jean HUNSICKER, wife of Barry L. HUNSICKER, all of Center Valley.

Mrs. KLOTZ was a seamstress at Jayco Sportswear, Bethlehem, for the last 12 years and previously worked at Dora Lee blouse in Hellertown. Her husband retired as a laboratory technician at AT&T in Allentown April 1.

The couple were returning from a dinner in Emmaus when the accident happened, police said.

The KLOTZes were married in Pilgrim Holiness Church, Oneonta, N.Y., on June 15, 1957.

Police identified the driver of the rig as William J. SCHAFFER Jr. of Bethlehem. They said he was thrown from the truck's cab.

SCHAFFER was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, where he was treated, a hospital spokeswoman said yesterday.
