Obituary of Franklin KICHLINE; Fri., Aug. 12, 1981 (copy obtained from the Easton Area Public library; Easton, Pennsylvania)

Hellertown man dies in N.J.. Zinc plant accident

A 28-year-old Hellertown man was killed early Tuesday when a section of mine flooded at the 2,000-foot level, at the Friedensville Mine of New Jersey Zinc co., in Upper Saucon Township, Lehigh County. The accident occurred about 6:30 a.m.

Franklin Kichline, of 758 Easton Road, was pronounced dead by Lehigh County Deputy Coroner Donald Bachman after he was brought from the mine.

An autopsy performed at Sacred Heart hospital showed that Kichline died from massive injuries suffered in the accident.

A second man, Brett Frantz, 23, of 23 Saucon St., Center Valley, was treated at St. Luke's Hospital for cuts of the right knee and thumb and chest bruises.

Company officials declined to talk with the press, but information developed from other sources indicated Kichline and Frantz were attempting to reduce pressure behind a bulkhead door so it could be opened. The door, however, collapsed, according to reports, and Kichline was blown about 300 feet into a water-filled hole.

The section of the mine where the accident occurred filled with water, and a mine crew had to work about six hours to pump out the water and recover Kichline's body, it was reported.

The federal Bureau of the Mines and the state Department of Labor and Industry had inspectors on the scene, but they said there would be no statement until the investigation has been completed. Investigators were to return to the mine today.

Mining operation continued uninterrupted today at the plant located about five miles southwest of Bethlehem.

Born in Allentown, Kichline was a son of Franklin H. and Jeanette Kichline of Center Valley.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, the former Cynthia Janney; two brothers, Norman W. of Coopersburg R.d. 1, and Alan of Sellersville, and a sister, Mrs. Joanne Greenwood, Frisco, Texas.
