Original settlers of Upper Canada:

Abraham Maybee, also known as Captain Abraham, was born 1/24/1748 and baptized in the Tappan Reformed Church on 2/21/1748. He was married first to Gerritje Hogenkamp on 5/12/1773, with whom he had at least two children: Peter, born 2/26/1775, and Abraham, born 11/15/1777. Abraham married second Ann Ackerman, a widow, on 4/22/1781. Abraham and Ann eventually settled in Adolphustown. A Return of the inhabitants of Adolphustown, Upper Canada, for March 1794 includes Abraham Maybee, his wife and 5 children. Abraham also had a daughter Jane, but it is uncertain whether her mother was Gerritje or Ann. A rather dubious account of early Adolphustown states that Abraham "had two sons, Robert and Isaac. Isaac was in the war of 1812, and died while thus in the services. Robert was drowned off a raft in the St. Lawrence when on the way to Quebec. Both were unmarried." Note that this source ignores sons Peter and Abraham. According to William D. Reid in Loyalists in Ontario, Abraham's son Robert McDowall Maybee is mentioned in the Orders-in-Council on 9/4/1834.

Frederick Mabee, originally from Dutchess County, NY, first settled in New Brunswick, later moving to Charlotteville, Norfolk County, sometime prior to 1793. A list of Frederick's children is taken from a "Roll of Loyalists Settled at Belle Hill in Beaver Harbour - 10th July, 1784": Frederick Maybee, wife Levina, children above 10: Lydia, Elizabeth, Oliver, children under 10: Mary, Sarah, Simon, Frederick. Frederick died in 1794, and Levinah married second William Benjamin Hilton. According to William D. Reid in Loyalists in Ontario, Sarah married Silas Montross, Mary married David Secord (see 1792 below) and Anne married John Stone, all of Charlottesville.

Lewis Mabee, a Sergeant with Butler's Rangers, was originally from the "Maquasland" area of Tryon County, NY. He married Nancy Pouwell in the Schenectady Reformed Dutch Church on 12/20/1767. Filed a Loyalist petition filed on 8/30/1787. A Census of Butler's Rangers at Niagara dated 11/30/1783 lists Sgt. Lewis Mabee, age 44, his wife, age 43, and children John (14), Elisabeth (12), Dorothy (10), Catherine (8) and Mary (6). Lewis and family settled in Willoughby. According to William D. Reid in Loyalists in Ontario, Mary married John Palmer of Willoughby and Dorothy married a Mr. Burger of Fort Erie. Note that Reid mistakenly lists two daughters of Lewis's son John as daughters of a different John Mabee. John's daughter Mary married David Rice and daughter Nancy married John Beam.

John Mabee, the son of Peter Mabee, of Saratoga, NY, who died in March 1777 while serving in Burgoyne's Army. His widow, Eleanor, remarried Joseph Hoffman. According to her claim, Peter had moved to Saratoga after having lived in Dutchess County, and they had a son named John who was 12 years old at the time of Eleanor's statement. Peter's estate in Saratoga was confiscated, and Eleanor was living in Sorel in 1783. It appears from the document that Eleanor's statement was given in February 1788, making son John's birth year approximately 1775.

John Mabee, son of Deliverance Mabee and Catherine Clemens, was baptized in the Tarrytown (Sleepy Hollow) Reformed Church, Westchester County, NY, on 8/30/1749. He was married to Catherine Hanse or and the baptisms of three of their children are found in the Church Register of the Walpeck Congregation in Sussex County, NJ. Maria was baptized on 6/15/1775, John on 6/8/1777, and Abraham, who was born on 11/14/1779, was baptized on 8/25/1781. From the 1816 will of John, he also had sons Henry, Andrew, and Daniel and daughters Phebe, Elizabeth and Katherine. John was a private in Butler's Rangers during the war. According to William D. Reid in Loyalists in Ontario, Mary married Daniel Masters of Ameliasburgh.

Tobias Maybee was a relative latecomer, having moved to Canada from Dutchess County, NY, in the mid to late 1790s. During the Revolution, Tobias had served the Patriot cause, and spent two months at Valley Forge (May and June 1778). Tobias is believed to have been the son of Jeremiah Mabee and Maria Clemens, making him a double cousin of John Mabee. Tobias was married to Jemima Way, and in the 1790 US Federal Census (Town of Beekman, Dutchess County) the family was enumerated with 5 young males, all under 16, and 1 additional female. Children of Tobias and Jemima are believed to have included: John Way, William Giles, Francis B., Godfrey, Giles Benjamin, Jeremiah, Elizabeth, Hester, Nancy, and Mary.

At a later time, the descendents of at least three other Loyalists seemed to have migrated to the area covered by these records. One of these Loyalists was yet another John Mabee, originally from Westchester County, NY, who settled after the war in Nova Scotia. John, who is believed to have been the son of John Mabee and Margaret Marshall, was recorded in a return of Westchester Loyalists on 10/15/1784, accompanied by one female and two younger males. It is believed that these others were John's siblings, including brothers Joseph and Isaac, both of whom later returned to Westchester County. In 1791, John's family was enumerated in Ramsheg (later called Wallace), with the family consisting of 1 male head of family, 1 female adult, and 1 male child. One son of John, Peter W. Mabie, died in Wallace on 1/18/1818, age 26, where he was buried in the Old Methodist Cemetery. Interestingly, Wallace is also the town where Thomas Huestis and his wife, Phoebe Mabee, resided. Phoebe's tombstone, in the Wallace Cemetery, states (as transcribed) that she died 7/10/1811, age 54.

Silas Mabee moved to New Brunswick after the war, but was back in Westchester County, NY by 1790. He moved back to Upper Canada between 1800 and 1808, then onto Ohio before 1820. At least one of his sons remained in Upper Canada.

William Mabee, a son of the Loyalist Jeremiah Mabee and Judith Chedeayne, was born in New Brunswick but moved to Windham Township, Norfolk County, sometime after his father's death in 1824.
