The book is the story of a young Nova Scotian raised by a pharisiacal uncle. He is filled with modernism at the seminary that was to train him for ministry, rebels against his religiously intolerant family, and goes to sea. He makes a great success of the sea becoming a master mariner and owning his own ship. Disaster in love and at sea and the minstering of a reformed pharisee from his youth bring him to his knees before God.

Wonderful sea story filled with the color of 19th century wooden ships. This is not “juvenile fiction” like Viking Blood. It contains graphic descriptions of love making and intense violence. I couldn&squo;t put the book down once I started reading it. It is easy to see why Hollywood wanted this story on film. If you have ever read Jack London’s The Sea Wolf you have met a master mariner like Wallace’s. I don't want to give away more of the story. It would be worth while to read both books to see the treatment given by the authors of very similar characters under similar conditions.
