Maritime Capital by Eric W. Sager and Gerald E. Panting

Maritime Capital. by Eric W. Sager and Gerald E. Panting [McGill-Queen’s University Press, Montreal & Kingston, London, Buffalo, 1990]. The shipping industry in Atlantic Canada 1820-1914.

This is not a book that will be reprinted for the genealogy trade. It does provide much detail on the economics of building and operating the square-rigged vessels in the 19th century. Many charts, graphs, and tables are used to display the details of trade paterns, sailing routes, ship building, etc. One will learn from this book where the varying rigs were best suited and why ships were built as they were. Ship building and operating in Atlantic Canada was a merchantile operation. If there was no profit there would be no ships and sailors.

For genealogy, Wallace’s book is the best bet with Spicer’s book and Parker’s book good suplements. To understand the economics, this is the best choice with Spicer perhaps a good introduction.
