Sails of the Maritimes by John P. Parker, M.B.E., Master Mariner

Sails of the Maritimes by John P. Parker, M.B.E. Hazell Watson & Viney Ltd, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, 1960.

Parker’s book contains many detailed descriptions of the large (300 ton and over) cargo schooners of Martime Canada. These were the last survivors of the age of sail as they were in use through World War I after the great square riggers had nearly disappeared. These schooners were used mostly for coastal North American trade. Many spent their lives hauling gypsum from Nova Scotia to New York. Others hauled lumber and timber. Many were used for general freight. These were not fishing schooners. The tramp steamer and diesel powered boats replaced these sailing vessels in the coastal trade.

Many schooners are listed and described. Noted are the builders, owners, and masters. There are many short histories of the vessels and men. My family had left the Canadian Maritimes for California by the time the cargo schooner reached its peak after 1890 so there is little genealogy interest here for me.
