Patricia O'Connor, R. G.

Three of us have worked on this Cheshire line, agonizing over every question; cutting and pasting and we have finally put this together.  Thanks to my seventh cousins, once removed, Carol  Rampelt DuPaix and Amy Ann Cheshire Jaye.

There are more than 38 ways of spelling Cheshire.  Those who stayed in Washington Co., KY have used the spelling Chesser since they arrived. In order to find anyone in my database, I needed to have a uniform way of spelling the name, so all these records use the spelling Cheshire.  However, we have found the following spellings: Chasser, Chedser, Cheeser, Chenire, Cheser, Chescher, Cheser, Chesham, Cheshen, Cheshier, Cheshir, Cheshur, Cheshure, Chesier, Chesire, Cheskire, Cheslure, Chesser, Chessher, Chesshire, Chessire, Chessor, Chessur, Chesure, Chiser, Chisher, Chisser, Chissy, Cliser and Shesshure.  The earliest Cheshires found in the new world used Cheshire.  Whoever took the census or wrote the legal papers went by the sound of the name, and the transcribers of various census' copied some wrong, hence Cliser, Cheskire and Cheslure.

If you have any questions or corrections, please contact me.

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN BAPTIST1 CHESHIRE  was born Abt. 1753 in Virginia or Maryland (Source: Rev War Pension papers), and died August 10, 1836 in Floyd Co., IN (Source: Estate papers). He married Sarah Abt. 1774 in MD or VA. She was born Abt. 1757 in Virginia or Maryland (Source: Rev War pension papers), and died Bet. 1840 - 1841 in Floyd Co., IN (Source: estate papers).

Notes for JOHN BAPTIST CHESHIRE:  Thanks to Carol duPaix, a cousin, who found them and Jeanne Johnson, (perhaps a cousin) who organized them, we have the Rev. War muster rolls and Pay stubs for John:

In 1831, John bought land in Floyd Co., IN.

In 1836, it was discovered that John had inadvertently built on land owned by Thomas Piers and a deed was issued exchanging that portion
of Piers' land for an equal portion of John's land.

See John's pension application:

The 1799 tax list of Washington Co., Ky shows John Cheschir, 75 acres 3rd class (?) on Wat. Cartwright's Cr. 1 male over 21, no males over 16, 2 horses This means his sons were all born between 1783-1799.

Cousin Carol du Paix found this in the (New Albany, KY) Gazette, dated September 2 and September 9, 1836

Carol du Paix found a letter at Notre Dame from John S. to

Rev. B. I. (?) Spalding,
Principal Mt. Merino Seminary
Brushy Fork P. O.
Breckinridge City, KY

My Dear Friend,

... I have just taken from the office. I have really not had time to inquire for letters since my return in the summer. The amt. of sick... here has been incredible. For six weeks after my return I rode day and night - literally the whole night frequently. During that time I booked on an average 30 dollars per day. But booking and collecting are matters entirely distinct.

I wish to the power above Don would ride down to ... and collect that debt and give the money to E. B. Smith against middle February. ... make Don do it if you please. Don; now ... Sir, if you please Sir - go and collect that debt for me. Write me a letter which shall arrive here against the 1st Feby. Don, saying whether or not you have collected it.

So to your school. I have full faith in it as well as in you and Don, and you may rely on my best exertions in your favor - whether I shall be able to effect any thing or not, I cannot say.

My matrimonial affairs are in status-quo, though I think they will in long come to a lucky close. Are there any girls up with you that wish to marry?

Let me know in your ... - Respects to Don and Mrs. Doctor .......

With high regard yr. friend J. S. Cheshire

P.S. Have you made the acquaintance of my friend Mrs. Ruth Wathen? She is Aunt Hatty's sister-in-law, lives very near Elizabethtown and is the most excellent lady in creation by thunder - excuse me for swearing. I wish to be emphatic. J.S.C.
