John B. Cheshire's Pension Application

County of Floyd Sct.

On this twenty-sixth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty nine personally appeared in open court being a court of Record for the County of Floyd and State of Indiana having the Power of fine and imprisonment and proceeding according to the course of the Common Law with a Jurisdiction unlimited in point of amount and Keeping a Record of this proceedings

John Chesshir aged seventy-five years and resident in said County who being duly sworn according to Law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the Act of Congress of the 18 March 1818 and the first of May 1820. That he the said John Chesshir enlisted for the term of one year as a volunteer on the ____ day of 1778 in the State of Virginia in Company commanded by Thomas West in the Regiment commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Commandant Samuel Cowes in the line of the State of Virginia in the Continental establishment.

That said Regiment was composed chiefly of drafted men. That some of those who were drafted were not accepted either from their not being able to pass muster or from some other cause they were not enrolled and some ran away they having volunteered not being drafted was in consequence taken in ___?___ and enrolled to make up the quota of the Regiment. That he continued to serve the United States in __?__ aforesaid in said corps until the 17th day of February 1779 when he was discharged from the service at Camp Middle Brooke in the State of New Jersey as a drafted soldier owing he believes to the circumstances aforesaid. That he hereby relinquishes every Claim to a Pension except the Present that his name is not on the roll of any State except Virginia. And that the following are his reasons for not making earlier application for a Pension. That he until __?__ one year before making application was able to support himself by his bodily labor and in pursuance of the ___ of the 1st day of May 1820, I do solumnly swear that I was a resident Citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift sale or in any manner disposed of my

Property or any part thereof with intent thereby __?__ ___?___ it as to bring myself within the provisions of an Act of Congress E___?__ An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and navel service of the United States in the Revolutionary War passed on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not nor has any person for me in trust any Property or securities contracts or debts due to me, nor Have I any Income other that what is Contained in the Schedule hereto annexed and by me Subscribed. that since the Eighteenth day of March 18__ no changes have taken place in my property. That my occupation is that of a farmer and that I am unable to labor from bodily disability for support.
I have a wife named Sarah seventy two years old who is also very infirm and that I have four children who are all married and able to maintain themselves
