Stephen's Smith Family - Ancestors, Descendants and Cousins

Notes

Thomas Taylor

Bardsley's "English Surnames" points out that the name Taylor took on more than Ten different forms, the total number being so extensive that no attempt could be made to collect them.

My Taylors of Maryland trace their ancestry to Baron Tallefer who came to England with William the Conqueror and led the charge of Hastings, going into battle "singing the old war songs". For his great services his family was given landed possesions in the county of Kent, Which descended to his posterity during the reigns of Henry III, Richard II, and Henry IV, and V. His descendants became the Earls of Pennington, who bear the same arms as those brought to Maryland and Virginia by the Taylors.

There were Taylors in Carlisle, England and Tayleurs of Ireland, who bore the same arms. The name was also spelled Telfair and Tailssifer. Mead states that John Telfair of Ireland was the ancestor of Matthew Taylor who came to New York in 1675. A pamphlet on the Taylor-Livingston Centenary(1904) Franklin County, Ohio, states that, that branch of the family left Scotland for religious reasons. They moved to the North of Ireland in 1620 (Londonderry) where they lived until 1720 when Mattew Taylor came to New Hampshire.
