The house is still standing today in good
condition on the Earnest and Margie Williams farm. (Picture
from 2005 shows condition of House Today) Margie Stone Williams is a granddaughter of Dr. Sam Stone. Dr. Stone practiced medicine, from an office
in his house, in the Springdale and Lone Mountain area of Claiborne County.
In the last issue, Summer-87 edition, of Reflections, the STONE cem. was published. In the following story in order to save space and avoid repetition I will use the following symbol, (SC) after those names who were buried in that cemetery.
Dr. Samuel W. (?Wesley)
Stone (SC) married Clarissa J. Thompson (SC). She was the widow of Prior L.
Mason who was an officer in the Federal army, and fell in battle in Kentucky. She had one child
by Prior Mason, a daughter, who was named P.L. in honor of her father. When Clarissa married Dr. Sam Stone he assisted
her in raising her daughter until grown; she then married William Arnwine. Clarissa did have another child, Sammy
Mason, by her 1st marriage, who died young.
The children of Dr. Sam
stone and Clarissa Thompson Stone were as follows:
1. Nannie Darcus Stone
b. June 4, 1872; died Sept. 13, 1943; marr. E.A. Pearson b. May 28,
1870; d.Mar. 18, 1939,
both are buried in the
Irish Cern. Issue--3 daus. and 1 son; Leomi Mason, Ida Jennings, Mima
Kate, and Lon.
2. David Shultz Stone
(SC) marr. Susan Virginia Stone (SC)
3. Emma Ann Stone b.
April 14, 1879; died Feb. 29, 1964; marr. N.D. Pearson (Neal S. Don) b. Jan.
12, 1874; died Mar. 12, 1944, both are bur. in Pearson cem. on
Pearson farm in Howard's Quarter. Issue-6 children: Leonard, Hubert, Charley
Frank, Loonie, Don, and Geneva..
4. Laura Stone (SC) d. about 1911; 2nd wife of Mike Farmer; Issue: 1 son--Rob Roy Farmer.
5. Iona Louvina Stone d.
Feb. 27, 1945 in Michigan; marr. Lewis Jennings. Issue-4 children: Maude,
Verbina, R.S., and Patrick.
6. Irvin F. Stone (SC)
marr. Elizabeth Shumate, later divorced. Issue-3 children: Dr. Fred O.
Stone (SC), Ewing who died in Oregon, Lily who marr. a Walters in Oregon.
7. James T. Stone M.D.
(SC) killed in New Mexico in a dispute over a patient with another doctor.
(both died) No
issue.
8. Whet Lafyette Stone (SC)
marr. Sallie Lovelace (SC). She was 1st marr. to Augustine Stone who was 1st
cousin to her
2nd husband. He died and is bur. in Lovelace Cem. Issue: 2 children by 1st
marriage; Faris August and Winnie May who marr. Joe Chittum, bur. in
Fairview Cem. Issue: 3 children by 2nd. marriage; Mattie who marr. Carson
Dalton, bur. Fairview Cem., Marjorie who marr. Ernest Williams, and James
Edv/ard (Buster) (SC) who marr. Bennie Mae Brooks.
9. Elmer Flint Stone b. Aug. 21, 1888, died in Oregon, marr.
Ada Evans. Issue-3 children; Elmer, Arville and Elsie who marr. a Bales.
10. Ulyssis Grant stone (SC) infant
11. William Harrison Stone (SC) infant
12. Sammy Stone (SC) infant
P.
L. Mason Arnwine, dau. of Clarissa by 1st marriage, vias b. Nov. 22, 1863, d.
May 2, 1924 and her husband William Arnwine was b. Nov.10, 1861, d. Mar. 25,
1930; both are bur. in Payne & Hodges Cemetery.
Dr. Sam Stone was the 4th son of Thomas Stone Sr. (SC), who married Mary Harper
(SC), a daughter of Willis Harper
from Virginia. Thomas Stone Sr. was a son of John Stone, Sr. who came to Tennessee
in an early day from North Carolina.
John Stone Sr. was married to Susan Henderson. Issue-3 sons and 3 daus.:
Thomas, James, and John; Polly, Betsy, and Susan. A sketch of the history of John
Stone Sr. is given in the book: OLD TIME TAZEWELL by Mary Hansard.
I
would like to make a correction in the last issue of REFLECTIONS on page 27 on
the Stone Cemetery: On Margaret A. V. 'Ihompson, her husband was a son of
Thomas Stone Sr. and brother to Sam Stone. Robert Stone had 2 wives 1st.
Margaret A..V. Thompson 2nd. Virginia Bones both bur. in Stone Cem. On
page 26 Laura Stone Farmer was thought to have died abt. 1911 instead of 1916.

Marjorie Stone Williams passed away 2004. ()
Grand-dau. of Dr. Sam Stone, standing on porch of old stone home. She was b.
Sept. 3, 1908 and marr. to Earnest (Sug) Williams, still lives on old
stone farm in Springdale.
