Mary Jane Warlick's Deposition

Mary Jane Warlick's Deposition

Court of Claims, Eastern Cherokee Indians

Cherokee County Courthouse, Murphy, NC, July 15, 1908

Witness relative, App. No. 222

App. No. 5482
Mary Jane Warlick, being first duly sworn, deposes and says:

I am about 40 years of age. I live in Cherokee County, NC. I have filed a claim. I know James L. McDonald and Thomas C. McDonald. I never heard until this matter came up that they were Indians. Did you or not write a letter to Special Commissioner saying they were not Indians? I did. Because they were never recognized by the band or called Indians. I know those around this community who were recognized as Cherokee Indians but never heard until of late that these parties were Cherokees. I know nothing of their family history.

Mary Warlick (signature)

Subscribed and sworn to before me this fifteenth day of July, 1908.
Special Commissioner
