[Editorial note: In 1962, the Athens Kiwanis Club began giving Kiwanis Scholarship Awards to students with demonstrated academic achievement. I was honored with the first of these awards given to a North City School student. This organization is widely acclaimed for contributions and service to educational endeavors. Frank Buttram, a local businessman, served as the president of Athens Kiwanis Club in 1942. In 1987, he was presented with the club's Distinguished Service Award.]
