In the photo above, Uncle Frank Hampton (1881 - 1964) is wearing a dark hat and sitting astride his steed on the right. Amos Cole is wearing a lighter-colored hat and a double-breasted coat. Although the location is unknown, it may be Englewood, TN about 1900. This photo is interesting because it shows a marketplace with a grassy commons. The businesses in the background have wooden steps and porches, supported by rock or brick pilings. No boardwalks are visible between the buildings.
Many, many thanks to Cousin Mary Lee Farmer for this and many other copies of old family photos! She has been a great help in finding and copying old pictures as well as getting identification for them. Also, she has surveyed numerous cemeteries, transcribed the tombstones, and shared them with us.
