These photos make Aunt Spaudie's home life seem as fresh as the fruit these folks hold in their hands. The snapshots depict a typical sunny day very late in summer. It seems like yesterday to some of us, but it was before the Great Depression. One can almost smell the smoke from the chimney! Aunt Spaude, called "Mam" by her children and grandchildren, no doubt had supper simmering slowly on the fire.
Occasionally, Grandma Hampton did venture out of Beaver Dam Township in Cherokee County, NC. From time to time, she enjoyed a trip across the Unakas to visit kinfolks in the Knobs, just over the state line in Tennessee. There on Beaty's Chapel Lane in Monroe County, she could spend long summer days with her daughter Spaude Graves and her ten grandchildren. From their house, she could ride in a wagon down Mecca "Meckie" Pike, turn right on Prospect-Liberty Hill Road at #39 and 310 junction, cross the McMinn County line, and arrive at her son Bob Hampton's farm at Liberty Hill. There were about eleven miles between their two homes. No doubt she enjoyed visiting with nine more grandchildren at Liberty Hill. "Merky," her daughter-in-law (so fondly called "Mommy Hampton" by grandchildren), was such a good cook. Why, just seeing her delicious, moist apple stack cakes displayed in that clear glass-domed cake plate made mouths water! Nothing beats Knobs cooking!
