1820 - Baptists established church at Old Natchez village and used it as a mission school for Indians.

1830 - Huntersville, first trading post, was built and operated by Col. Archibald Russell Spence Hunter.

1835 - Huntington, first post office, opened February 23 with Col. Archibald R. S. Hunter as first postmaster.

1834 - Valley River Missionary Baptist Church was established on November 22.

1837 - Peachtree Baptist Church was organized on June 27.

         - Rossville Post Office was established on February 16 with Henry Grady postmaster.

         - Jamesville Post Office opened February 16 with James Whitaker postmaster.

1838 - Fort Butler was built for military headquarters during Cherokee Indian Removal.

1839 - Cherokee County was established out of Macon County lands.

         - First county court was held in a Fort Butler structure.

         - Frances McGee was appointed first Cherokee County sheriff.

         - Peachtree Post Office was established March 15 with Jesse Brooks postmaster.

1840 - Cherokee County's first census enumerated 3,427 residents.

1843 - Persimmon Creek Post Office was established on March 15 with Benjamin Stiles, first postmaster.

         - Fort Hembree Post Office opened August 8 with Frances McGee as postmaster.

1844 - Hanging Dog Baptist Church (Old White Church) was organized May 5.

         - Cherokee County's first courthouse, a two-story brick building, was completed.

         - Founder of Murphy, Col. Archibald R. S. Hunter died June 23.

1847 - Turtletown Post Office was established in Shoal Creek Township December 23 with Elias Milton Kilpatrick, Sr. as postmaster.

1850 - Cherokee County's second census named 6,838 individuals.

1851 - Murphy settlement was officially designated county seat and named for NC attorney Archibald DeBow Murphey.

1853 - John Caldwell opened a wagon trail road from Ocoee to Ducktown, TN

1854 - Mercer Fain's Bloomery Forge at Owl Creek opened for production.

         - John Caldwell's Ocoee River Gorge Road opened all the way from Cherokee County, NC to Cleveland, TN.

1860 - Cherokee County's third census listed 9,166 residents.

         - Methodists located their first church in Murphy and named it Harshaw Chapel.

1861 - North Carolina seceded, and Cherokee County was asked to supply 1100 men for CSA.

         - Clay County was established from southeastern corner of Cherokee County.

1865 - Kirk's raiders in Union Army set fire to Cherokee County Courthouse and burned it down in April.

         - Skirmish at Hanging Dog was last battleground for Civil War in Cherokee County.

1868 - New brick courthouse replaced previous building.

1870 - Fourth census recorded Cherokee County population as 8,080.

1871 - Hiwassee and Cheoah Turnpike Company was established.

1872 - Graham County was established from western section of Cherokee County.

1873 - First newspaper, Cherokee Herald, went to print December 11.

         - Marble Springs Baptist Church was organized on June 16.

1880 - Fifth census of Cherokee County enumerated 8,182 residents.

1882 - Mount Pleasant Academy opened with Professor Rolan as teacher.

1886 - Holiness Church was established August 19 near Camp Creek in Shoal Creek District.

1888 - GA-NC Railway from Marietta, GA to Murphy, NC was opened.

1890 - Andrews was officially incorporated as a town.

1891 - Railway from Asheville, NC to Murphy, NC was opened.

1892 - Fire destroyed new courthouse.

1893 - Courthouse was rebuilt.

1895 - Rebuilt courthouse went up in flames.

         - Bellview Academy dedication was held Saturday, September 7.

1896 - Courthouse was rebuilt using same outer walls.

1897 - Andrews Presbyterian Church was organized.

         - Ebenezer Baptist Church was organized.

1898 - First bank named Miners and Planters Bank opened doors to customers.

1900 - Cherokee County's population count rose to 11,860 on sixth census.

1902 - First Baptist Church of Andrews was formed March 12.

1904 - Bank of Murphy opened for business.

         - Baptists established Murphy Academy and Commercial Institute.

1906 - First General Assembly of the Church of God was held at J. C. Murphy's home at Camp Creek, January 26 - 27.

         - Mt. Nebo Baptist Church was organized March 31.

1910 - Total population for Cherokee County numbered 14,136 on 1910 census.

         - Waterworks system began operating in Murphy.

         - Dome School building was built.

1912 - Commercial and Savings Bank opened.

         - Cherokee Lumber Company was chartered.

         - Murphy Courier began publication.

         - Mount Zion Baptist Church was founded.

1913 - Georgia and Carolina Railroad was formed.

1914 - Hiwassee Power Company was chartered.

1917 - Cherokee County's local chapter of Red Cross was established.

         - Archibald D. Murphey Monument was unveiled August 11 in Murphy.

         - Worldwide influenza epidemic hit Cherokee County residents.

1920 - Census for Cherokee County recorded 15,242 residents.

         - New post office was dedicated.

1922 - First paved highway from Murphy to Georgia was opened for travelers.

1923 - Three new industries located inside county and provided employment for residents.

1925 - Worst drought in recorded history struck Cherokee County.

1926 - Courthouse burned down.

         - New paved highway from Asheville, NC to Murphy, NC opened to traffic.

1927 - New courthouse was dedicated.

         - Cherokee Roller Mills was destroyed by fire.

1928 - Murphy town bought hydroelectric plant and began selling electricity to residents and commercial enterprizes.

1930 - Cherokee County census enumerated 16,151 residents.

1935 - Hiwassee Dam construction began.

1937 - Murphy Mills was destroyed by fire.

1938 - Ranger Missionary Baptist Church was organized on July 3 with Rev. W. T. Truett elected pastor.

1940 - Total population increased to 18,813 on 1940 Cherokee County census.

         - Church of God erected the largest Ten Commandment stones in the world at Fields of the Woods assembly grounds.
