John Nichols Murphy's Biographical Sketch

(The following is an excerpt from Scates' Mill Precinct Biographical Sketches of Christian County, Kentucky by William Henry Perrin, p. 573.)

John N. Murphy, of the firm of White & Murphy, general merchants, of Scates' Mill Precinct, was born July 28, 1844, in McMinn County, Tenn; he is the son of Jefferson D. and Susan (Orten) Murphy. The former was a native of McMinn, and the latter of Carter County, Tenn. The subject of this sketch being an orphan at the age of six months, he was reared by his step-father, with whom he remained until he was twenty-nine years of age. In 1875 he removed to near his present residence and opened a general merchandising business, and has increased his trade from $500 to $5,000 per year. In the spring of 1863 he enlisted in Walker's Battalion, where he served four months. He was married on the 11th of July, 1869, to Miss C. A. White. They have two children. Mrs. Murphy is a native of McMinn County, Tenn. In addition to his merchantile business he engaged in farming, and is the owner of 270 acres of land.
