Decatur Postmaster Changes in 1855


In 1855, J. M. McCorkle was removed from his postmastership, and William C. Witt was appointed the new postmaster at Decatur Post Office in Meigs CO, TN. According to this article from The Athens Post published Friday, October 5, 1855, these changes were obviously politically motivated. Joseph McCorkle was Decatur postmaster in January 1851 per U. S. Post Office list of postmasters.
