BLENCOWE OF BICESTER, OXFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND

BLENCOWE OF BICESTER, OXFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND

The BLENCOWE family is quite large and trace’s back to William BLENCOWE who was born c1735 in Launton, Oxfordshire. He married 1st Sarah MORSE in 1761 and then Ann ALLUM (ALLOM) in 1763.

William had six children including three sons whom the Bicester BLENCOWE’s are descended. William’s great-granddaughter Eliza BLENCOWE came to New Zealand with her husband John George HUDSON and three children in 1873. Family story has it that Eliza was not in good health and the move to New Zealand was thought to help her. Unfortunately she died in 1879 - cause of death - Phythis pulmanatis 7 years.

The biggest problem researching this family has been the many changes of the spelling of the surname. To enable indexing the name has standardised as BLENCOWE. (On World Connect, I have put the spelling of the surname at baptism in brackets in the family trees). There are 14 known variants of the surname including BLENCO, BLENCOWE, BLINCHKO, BLINCOW, BLINKHO, BLENCOE, BLENKO, BLINCO, BLINCOWE, BLINKO, BLENCOW, BLINCHO, BLINCOE and BLINKCOE. No doubt others will appear over time.

Over the years I have made contact with members of the BLENCOWE FAMILIES' ASSOCIATION, especially Jill DUDBRIDGE and later, Jack BLENCOWE who were an enormous help with the research on this family. Keith HAZELL had also researched the BLENCOWE’s of Bicester and we were able to swap information so the family tree is fairly well documented.

I operate a small mailing list for this family advising of new contacts and any other family information that comes to hand. Please let me know if you would like to add your name to the mailing list.
