TE KUITI AND PIO PIO

KING COUNTRY CHRONICLE, VOLUME XII, ISSUE 1139, 19 NOVEMBER 1918

INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC.
CONDITIONS IMPROVING LOCALLY.
The general opinion of those in charge of the Temporary Hospital is that the epidemic is gradually being curbed. Of course there are a number of serious cases, but not so many are now coming in. The following deaths have occurred at Te Kuiti since Saturday: -

GADSBY George Mrs [Margaret] 33 years Te Kuiti
MEGSON Walter Mrs [Minnie Edith] 31 years Te Kuiti
LAWSON Ivy Rose Mrs 28 years Kopaki
HARRISON William John 26 years Oparure
TOPI Ripeka Pene Mrs 34 years Wife of Rev. Pene Topi, native clergyman, Te Kuiti
HETET Hikaka Mrs [Not registered] Te Kuiti

More men and women helpers are asked for at the Temporary Hospital. They are not alone required to nurse, but to work in the kitchen and run messages, etc. We hope the appeal will not fall on deaf ears, and that all will do their best, be it ever so little. Any old linen rag of every description would be thankfully deceived at the Temporary Hospital. The stocks are getting low, and fresh supplies are urgently required. Anyone having a few spare fowls would be doing their fellow citizens a kindness by killing same and sending them to the Temporary Hospital, to be turned into broth and other necessary invalid sustenance. We cannot too earnestly impress upon those who are becoming convalescent the necessity of remaining at home for some time after leaving their beds. It is not fair to those who have nursed them, nor to the overworked doctors, that they should run the risk of a relapse or spreading the disease by coming into contact with those who have been fortunate enough to escape the malady. It is a well-known fact that it is very easy to spread the germs of any disease when one is recovering from an attack by mixing up with the public. A few more days about the home would not hurt anyone during convalescence.

At Pio Pio the epidemic has a fair hold, and a hospital is being started to-day. So far there has been one death: -

KITSON William Benjamin 26 years Baker and returned Soldier
