NIGHTCAPS MINE ON FIRE
THREE MEN CUT OFF

On Friday 21 June, 1907 at 6am fire broke out in the Nightcaps Coal Mine, Southland.

The mine had caught fire over four years before and there had been problems in keeping the fire in check. About midnight before the tragedy the fire became troublesome and by 6am, had quickly got out of control.

Dense volumes of smoke issued from the mine and at 7am it was reported that four men were entombed. A rescue party was raised and when they reached the bottom of the dip with great difficulty, the found JARDINE lying nearly dead between the rails.

I a further search two or three of the search party were overcome by the damp and had to be carried out. The search was resumed once air could be pumped into the mine.

The three victims were;-

CARSON William Married with four children (2 - 6years)
DUNCAN William Married with five children (8 - 17 years)
WALSH Patrick A widower with five grown-up children
