The following are New Zealand Naval war deaths during World War One

The New Zealand Genealogist June 2014 - p104
The first New Zealander to die in World War One, John REARDON of Kaikoura, was a sailor the ill-fated Australian submarine AE1 that sunk off the Duke of York Islands in New Britain. The submarine and the bodies within it have not yet been found.
