TE KARAKA MEMORIAL.
The very fine memorial for the fallen, erected by order of Mr E. M. Hutchinson, of Waikohu, at the junction of the main road and the station road at Te Karaka, has been almost finished, and the contractors, Messrs Kane and Griffen, expect to hand the complete job over to Mr Hutchinson during this week. The monument will occupy a triangular section, at the corner mentioned, very artistically laid out and surrounded with shrubs. Seating accommodation will be placed on the site for the convenience of those visiting the monument. The stone will certainly form a fitting monument of the sacrifice of those who fell in the war, and represents an artistic copy, in the finest Carrara marble, of the regimental badge of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, on a base of New Zealand marble from the Moa Quarries. The panel facing the main road will be inscribed with the dedication: — "This monument is erected by Edward Massey Hutchinson and his wife, Eleanor, in memory of their dear son and his comrades from the Waikohu County who lost their lives in the Great War, 1914--1918," and the other panels will contain the following names of soldiers who did not return:— Pte. James Bain, 2nd Lieut. Harry Benson, Pte. Chas. Beard, Lieut. Florence Crimmin, Pte. Frederick R. Evinson, Pte. Foster S. Fisher, Gunner Frank W. Gardner, Dvr. G. R. S. Grieve, Pte. George D. Hay, Rflm. Brian M. Hutchinson, Pte. Leslie J. Jones, Pte. Frank L. Lister, Pte. Owen E. Lynch, Rflm. Benjamin Morris, Sergt. Dennis Murphy, Pte. T. W. Martin, Pte. Jas., McPhee, Pte. John McPhee, M.M., Rflm. Samuel J. Noble, Pte. J. V. Porter, Pte. Te Whiwhiruru. Pte. Kirirapana; Pte. Cecil L. V. Seaborne, Tpr. Francis G. Smith, Pte. Ernest F. Tait, L.-Cpl. Arthur R. Trafford, Tpr. Arthur Ward, Pte. Hine Maakapera. It is understood that the generous donor desires that no public function shall attend the handing over of the monument.

After the Second World War, memorial gates were added with tablets affixed to the pillars listing another 48 names. Though presumed to be for World War II, some of these names appear to be from World War I.
