EDWARD L. ALEXANDER


Many Years in Service
Herewith is a picture of Edward Lorenzo Alexander, locomotive engineer on the Kent division of the Erie Railroad. He began service with the Erie in 1887, as a masonry or bridgegang worker. In April, 1892, he became a brakeman on the Kent division, and in October of the same year began firing an engine. Since December, 1902, he has been an engineer, and for the last fourteen years has run mostly on the Second district of the Kent division.

"Pete" Alexander is known everywhere as a genial, jovial man, and his sense of humor makes him esteemed by all.

Kent Division engineer E.L. Alexander of Marion was retired recently on the special allowance payroll at age 70 after 427 years, 7 months of service.




From the July, 1937 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine:
Edward Lorenzo Alexander, 72, retired Erie engineer, died at his home, 301 Olney Avenue, Marion, late in May (1937). He had been in Erie service 43 years and was an engineer for 32. He was a member of the B of LF&E and Lutheran Church. He is survived by his widow, two children, Mrs. Grace Mae Smith of 136 Canby Court and Roland E. Alexander of Chicago, and a brother, M. Alexander of Richwood, OH.
