Erie Railroad Biography - E.W. Batchelder

SUPT. E.W. BATCHELDER.
Our cut this month, in the popular feature series of Division Superintendents of the Erie, presents Mr. E.W. Batchelder, who presides over the destinies of the Meadville Division, with headquarters at Meadville, Pa.

It is an excellent cut, too, and shows Mr. Batchelder, just as one might find him at almost any time. He is not a demonstrative individual at all, but, on the contrary, appears to be very sedate. Just the same he is not as sedate as he looks. It's only a way he has, but when once he knows you, warms up like a crocus bed under a soft, mellow May sunshine, and the longer you know him the greater your good opinion of him becomes.

Superintendent Batchelder knows his division, as an aborigine knows the trail and you can't lose him, even along the lonely spots. He is out a great deal on the line and always keeps his anchor cast to windward. He isn't burdened with family cares -- at least we're told he's not -- and that gives him ample time to disport himself as he chooses, and that's why he is likely to be found at any time or any place on his division between Salamanca and Kent, looking over the "affairs of State." Of course, he has a hobby or two, like the rest of us. Maybe automobiling in a 1911 Wescott car, is one of them. J.D. Brown, of Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., 0hio, swears fishing is another (and there are others), pleasure he enjoys.

As to the railroad record of Superintendent Batchelder, it is one which shows that the goods have been delivered. It is as follows:
From 1870 to 1873-Telegraph Operator on the La Crosse Division of the Chicago, Miilwaukee & St. Paul R.R.
From 1873 to 1879-Chief Train Dispatcher of the Chicago Division of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul R.R.
