From the August, 1925 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine:
Fred Baumgartner died at his home in Hammond, IN on June 3 (1925), after an illness of one month. He entered the service of the Erie Railroad as brakeman, December 24, 1891; was promoted to fireman, July 2, 1892; and to engineer March 17, 1899, serving in that capacity continuously until shortly before his death. His long service record was singularly free from responsibility in connection with derailments and accidents, and was indicative of the integrity of the man and the zealousness of his work.
