Erie Railroad Biography - John Arter


From the January, 1915 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine:
Engineer John Arter was credited with running his engine for 26,979 miles without the need for major engine maintenance, a sign of efficiency and careful handling.




From the December, 1933 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine:
Veteran Engineer John Arter retired from service recently at age 70 after over 40 years of service.




From the June, 1940 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine:
John Arter, 77, retired engineer, died in Good Samaritan Hospital at Galion following a year's illness May 14, 1940. He was born Nov. 30, 1862 in Dekalb, IN to Samuel Arter and Elizabeth Louthan. Surviving are two sons and daughters, Roy C. Arter of Galion, John Arter, Jr. of St. Petersburg, FL, Mrs. William Free of Galion, and Mrs. Harry Bowen of Cleveland; a brother, Frank Arter of Cleveland; and two sisters, Emma and Anna Arter, both of Cleveland.
