Erie Railroad Biography - John Caufield (Canfield)


From the March 17, 1893 issue of The New York Times:
Engineer John Canfield on Express Train No. 10, collided at Lackawaxen station with Express Train No. 12 the morning of March 16, 1893. Canfield and his fireman Frank Boyd received a few slight bruises in the collision. The cause of the accident was placed on the conductor of No. 12, Edward Lemunyan, not sending out a flagman to protect No. 12's hind end.

From the May, 1909 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine:

On the morning of April 17 (1909) death claimed one of the Erie's oldest engineers, John Caufield. Mr. Caufield was in continuous service for 40 years and was an honored and trusted employee. He is survived by a wife and three children. The funeral was held at the home and at the Church of the Most Sacred Heart April 20. Interment was at St. Mary's Cemetery.



From the June, 1909 issue of the Locomotive Engineers' Monthly Journal, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers:
Port Jervis, NY, Apr. 17, 1909, Brother John Canfield, member of Div. 54, age 59, died of valvular insufficiency. He was admitted to the Brotherhood on Feb. 16, 1899. A $1,500 insurance payment was made to Catherine Canfield, wife.
