Erie Railroad Biography - Mahoning Division Veterans

R.M. SHANE, C. CORLETT, L. BERGER, T. SIMPSON

From the February, 1919 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine:
It often occurs that Erie employes appear in the limelight with more than half a century of service to their credit. The individual pictures of these veterans have appeared from time to time in this MAGAZINE, and those who realize that the Erie railroad is one of this country's oldest institutions are not surprised when they read the records of Erie employes that go far beyond the half-century mark. In a group they make a proud exhibit.

The four veterans who appear in the accompanying picture have seen long service with the Erie, and the number of years that all have labored makes a total of 200. All are employes of the Mahoning division.

R.M. Shane, engineer, has served more than fifty-five years; C. C. Corlett, conductor, who retired three years ago, had served fifty years. Louis Berger, trainman, has served fifty-four years, and is still doing full duty. T. Simpson, pilot, has forty-five years to his credit.

Engineer Shane is now running two of the company's important passenger trains. He started work at the age of thirteen as brakeman. Trainman Berger is running on trains between Cleveland and Youngstown. He enjoys the distinction of having carried one pair of train markers for twenty-one years, and gave them up only when they were unfit for further duty. T. Simpson is working in the capacity of pilot, handling trains between Cleveland depot and the Liberty street coach yard.
