Hello again,
    There's been quite an addition to the amount we have on line since we last wrote; two more complete pieces have been added to the database. Most of you have already heard about, and been thanked for, piece 1645 (Brighton) - because most of you had contributed to it! It appears that the size of that piece, 32,009 entries, is probably a record within FreeCEN. We don't get a medal or a certificate for that, but you are allowed to bask in a warm glow of satisfaction. The other piece, which went on line this month, is 1649 (Petworth, Wisborough Green, etc). By contrast, that represents 18 months work by five team members, not 3 years by eleven of you. Nevertheless, we are also grateful for those contributions, and appreciative of the effort that goes into every stage of the preparation - transcription, checking and validating.
   Work on the remaining three pieces is progressing well and it won't be long before the 1851 Sussex Census is completed. Most of you will know that we are intending to "retire" from FreeCEN when that is done, leaving just the 1841 to be transcribed. If that is to happen then a new coordinator for the county will be needed. If you're an experienced transcriber and checker, would you consider taking on this role? The basic task is to keep tabs on the pieces of the Census, allocating them to the various volunteers to work on. There is also the job of validating each piece, going through it for a final check before sending it off to be put on line. Do let us know if you might be interested or would like to find out more; the coordinators for the other counties are a helpful bunch, happy to give advice and support, and we would be available to get you "up and running" at the start. Please think about it.

The 1891 Census for Sussex has been completed by another FreeCEN Team, and
the 1881 Census is already available without charge thanks to the LDS. The Censuses for 1861 and 1871 were completed by this team.
