The origin of the name Barker

The origin of the name Barker

English: 1: occupational name for a tanner of leather, from Middle English bark(en) to tan (from the bark of a tree, which was used in the process; the word is of Scandinavian origin, and is probably cognate with Old English berc, beorc, a byform of birce, bierce birch). 2: occupational name for a shepherd, Anglo-Norman French bercher (Late Latin berbicarius, from berbex, genitive berbicis, ram). With the change of -ar- to -er- in Middle English, this became indistinguishable from the preceding name.

Cognates (of 2): French: Berger, Bergey (Eastern France), Berget (Northern France). Provençal: Bergier, Berguier.

Diminutives (of 2): French: Bergereau, Bergeret, Bergeron, Bergeronneau, Bergerot. Provençal: Bergerioux.

Barker or variants was the 99th most common name in England and Wales according to a survey taken by H.M.Treasury in 1944, with a relative frequency of 0.11%.
