English: habitation name from places so called, especially those in Cheshire and Lancashire, which get their names from the Old English personal name Dudd(a) + Old English tūn enclosure, settlement.

There is a family of this name who have been established at Dutton, Cheshire since the 11th century. An ancestor, Odard, was recorded there in Domesday Book; his grandson, Hugh de Dutton, was lord of the manor in the reign of Henry II (1154 - 1189).
