[Pg 96] St. Austell Parish (Pop. 8,758)

Thirty-seven Daily Schools; one of which (commenced 1825) contains 10 males and 18 females, of whom 15 are paid for by charity, the remainder by their parents; two others, 50 of both sexes; seven others, 157 males and 98 females; another (commenced 1819) 15 males and 21 females; another (commenced 1826) 30 males and 10 females; another, a Day and Evening School, (commenced 1828) 25 males and 7 females; two others (commenced 1829) of which one contains 21 males; and one (appertaining to Arminians) 21 of both sexes; another (commenced 1833) 19 of both sexes; the other twenty-one (returned as Infant Schools) contains 167 males and 250 females; all the above children (with the exception of 15 in the first-mentioned School) are instructed at the expense of their parents.

[Note - Arminianism is a reformation/Protestant teaching regarding salvation. This doctrine, related to Calvanism, Congregationalism, and Unitarianism, was espoused by John Wesley and his followers in the 18th century.]

One Day and Sunday National School, supported by subscription (commenced 1825) in which are 80 females daily, and 74 males and 120 females on Sundays, who attend the Established Church.

Eight Sunday Schools: one of which consists of 58 males and 37 females; four others of 295 males and 196 females; another (commenced 1819) of 36 males and 28 females; the five last appertain to Wesleyan Methodists; of the other two (commenced 1832) one is attached to General Baptists, and consists of 56 males and 47 females; and on to Arminians, of 60 children of both sexes; all are supported by collections and subscription.

One Infant School, in which 10 males and 12 females are instructed at the expense of their parents.

Four Daily Schools: two containing 149 males and 21 females, (commenced 1820); another 8 males and 29 females; and the other, 20 children of both sexes; the two last commenced 1833, and the instruction of all the children is paid for by their parents.

Four Sunday Schools - in one of which are 56 males and 42 females, who attend the Establsihed Church; this School is supported by a Lady,. Another consists of 40 males and 20 females, (commenced 1820); another, 127 males and 99 femleas, (commenced 1826); and the other, 179 children of both sexes, (commenced 1828); the last three are supported by subscription, and appertain to Dissenters.

Charlestown Parish - part of St. Austell

Eight Daily Schools, together containing 74 males and 64 females, of whom 36 are paif for by subscription, the rest by their parents; four Schools have commenced since 1818.

Two Sunday Schools, in one of which (commenced since 1818) are from 60 to 70 children of both sexes, who attend the Established Church; the other (commenced 1824) consists of 35 of both sexes, appertaining to Wesleyan Methodists; the children in these Schools receive gratuitous instruction.

Ten Daily Schools: one of which, containing 9 males and 16 females, is supported by endowment; the salary of the mistress is 8l.10s. per annum; another School contains 40 children, endowed by Shadrach Vincent, Esq., with the rents and profits arising from a freehold, called "Newhouse Estate;" the master receives a salary of 30l. per annum, for which he instructs 30 of the above number, the other 10 are paid for by their parents; four others contain 103 children; another from 25 to 30 males; the other three (principally working schools for girls) contain about 60; in the last eight Schools the children are all instructed at the expense of their parents.

Two Sunday Schools, in one of which (commenced 1819) are 140 males and 160 females, for whose use books are supplied by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge; these children attend the Established Church; the other consists of 60 children, appertaining to Independents; both Schools are supported by subscription.

Three Daily Schools; one containing 15 males and 35 females, is partly supported by Sir Colman Rashleigh and the Rev. Mr. Grylls, and partly by payments from the parents of the children; another, 25 males and 5 females; the other (commenced 1832) contains 37 males and 8 females; in the two last schools the children are instructed wholly at the expense of their parents.

Two Sunday Schools, respectively attended by 45 males and 60 females, are supported by Sir C. Rashleigh, and the Rev. Mr. Grylls.

Six Infant Schools, containing 32 males and 62 females, whose instruction is paid for by their parents. Six Daily Schools; two containing 51 males and 26 females; one (commenced 1820) 30 males and 10 females; one (commenced 1824) 17 females; the other two (commenced 1827) 18 males and 30 females; these are also instructed at the expense of their parents.

Two Sunday Schools; one, attached to Independents, consists of 70 males and 81 females; the other, to Wesleyan Methodists, of 110 males and 120 females; both are supported by donations, and conducted by gratuitous teachers.

One Infant School (commenced 1830) containing 12 males and 13 females, whose instruction is paid for by their parents.

Seven Daily Schools; one containing 3 males and 4 females, supported by an endowment amounting to 2l.10s. per annum; four others contain 16 males and 27 females; another (commenced 1826), 36 males and 6 females; and the other (commenced 1829), 23 males and 10 females. In all the Daily Schools (with the exception of the first mentioned) the children are instructed at the expense of their parents.

Three Sunday Schools, one, (of the Established Church, commenced 1830), is attended by 16 males and 43 females; the other two appertain to Wesleyan Methodists, of which one consists of 90 males and 69 females, the other (commenced 1827) of 80 males and 38 females; all are supported by contributions, and conducted by gratuitous teachers.

Par Parish - part of St. Austell and Tywardreath

Two Daily Schools; one contains 50 males and 66 females, and is partly suppored by the Clergyman and partly by payments from the children; in the other, 14 males and 6 females are instructed at the expense of their parents.

One Sunday School (to which a lending Library is attached), wherein 68 males and 74 females receive gratuitous instruction. This and the first Daily School have commenced since 1818.

Three Infant Schools, in which 47 males and 42 females are instructed at the expense of their parents.

Four Daily Schools; one containing 39 males and 21 females, for the support of which 5l.5s. is allowed by the parish for the instruction of poor children, and 2l. by the minister for the same purpose, others are paid for by their parents; another (commenced 1830) contains 50 males and 10 females; the other two (commenced 1831) 30 males and 33 females; in the last three Schools all the children are instructed at the expense of their parents.

Three Sunday Schools; two of which are attended by 95 males and 81 females; the other appertains to Wesleyan Methodists (commenced 1826) and consists of 87 males and 63 females; all are supported by subscription.

Ten Daily Schools: five of which contain 47 males and 68 females; another (commenced 1830) 40 males and 10 females; three others (commenced 1831) 21 males and 16 females; and the other (commenced 1833) 20 males and 30 females, of whom 20 receive instruction at the expense of William Rashleigh, Esq., all the others being paid for by their parents.

Three Sunday Schools; in two of which are 86 males and 60 females, who attend the Established Church; the other appertains to Wesleyan Methodists, and consists of 106 males and 100 females; these Schools are supported by subscription; most of these children attend the Daily Schools also.

NOTES (included in the report)

-- Daily Scholars being usually admitted at Boarding Schools (of which Fourteen appear in the Returns from the county of Cornwall,) and the boarders being indeed Daily Scholars, such Boarding Schools are here included; at Fourteen, the children are said to commence at Two years of age, at Fifty-five others at Three years, but as some of them remain beyond Seven years of age, they have not been classed as Infant schools, although usually so called in the original Returns; but it was necessary to adopt a uniform classification according to the age of leaving School. At Forty-four of the Daily Schools, the children remain in some instances beyond fourteen years of age. National and Lancastrian Schools are distinguished as such in the Abstract, whenever so denominated in the original Returns.

-- Of the Sunday Schools, only Six are returned from places where no other School exists, and the few children (207 in number) who are instructed therein, cannot be supposed to attend any other School; at all other places Sunday School children have opportunity of resorting to other Schools also; but in what number or in what proportion duplicate entry of the same children is thus produced, must remain uncertain. Twenty-six Schools, containing 1,381 children, which are both Daily and Sunday Schools, are returned from various places, and duplicate entry is therefore known to have been thus far created.

-- No School in the county of Cornwall appears to be confined to the children of parents of the Established Church, or any other religious denomination, such exclusion being disclaimed in almost every instance, especially in Schools established by Dissenters, with whom are here included Wesleyan Methodists, and one School for Jewish children.
